I am trying to install Fallout 3 on my new (win7) laptop that doesn't have a disc drive
I mapped my old (winXP) desktop computer's DVD drive to the laptop over the network

it all installs fine
and then right at the end when i try to open it, it says some shit about securom not finding a DVD rom and quits out of it

I haven't really used windows for a few years
is there some way I can get around this, or have I just joined the enormously list of people who have been fucked in the ass by sony?

I have been linux only for a few years now (and xbox)

GTA IV / SecuROM user here, Never had a problem or hassle at all with the DRM itself. One time activation + Freedom to play offline or online is great.

The error is you're trying to play the disc based game version without the disc... Correct? Have you checked the developers website or where you purchased the game for a downloadable title? Doesn't hurt to ask or look around, I've heard of exchanges of sorts in the past.

It's not going to work.
You're better of mounting an image and cracking the game. It's the sad truth.

The thing is that the game gets a list of your physical dvd drives through a system call to the os. I don't think network drives are included there. Also most copy protections are kind of picky and does various checks to ensure that the drive is really a real dvd drive. This is why daeamontools and similar software don't do the trick, even if you mount a 1:1 image of the disk using cue sheet or something. Preventing the use of images instead of an original disk is the purpose of the copy protection. That is why you need to use a crack that disables this "feature", typically simply by juming over the part of the code that does the checking.

(legaly purcased) games is probably the only reason to keep a dvd player around these days.

Yeah yeah, I know the general complaints this shitty port gets. Fun as hell though. The only thing you need to get it running "smoothly" is setting up a commandline.txt and inputting "-framelimit 1", At least for me.
