Background:

I'm a C developer and a former Java developer. I don't like Ruby so don't even mention it. I'm looking into scripting languages for a certain web related project of mine but I will probably use them on other projects too in the future.

I'm looking for legitimate reason.

People don't like Perl because it's difficult to read, and some consider it obsolete for some reason.

You shouldnt use python over perl, perl is obviously superior. Python is for kiddie ubanto users, babbys first programming language and such

I know about that and to be honest, it baffles me. I kind of love the Perl syntax. The sentiment might die when I encounter huge Perl hacked projects but at the moment I don't find Python really that more readable.

As for Perl becoming obsolete. Is that true or not? I don't want to pick a dieing language. I suppose since Python is considered also a beginners language it might outgrow the Perl community in the future because of the reluctance of Python beginners to move over to Perl.

Ok, I got myself some stats from langpop.com. As I predicted although Perl is more popular in terms of projects written in it, Python is growing in popularity while Perl is almost static.

This kind of makes me rethink my preference for Perl.

just and off question, i've worked with embedded C for a good 8 months or so, but not much with C, only some side project stuff.. is C commonly used on windows platforms or is it mostly used for linux based applications

Even google uses mainly Python for it's software. Man, youtube is almost entirely Python.

Python is a great language, it might not be for performance but it's great to work with, professional or amateur.

There is nothing (as far as I'm aware) that perl can do that python can't do.
The only real issue as I see is speed;
Python is far faster to develop but slower to run.
...but then there is shit like psyco so that's getting less true.
I'd learn python, it's kind of beautiful in a way that perl just isn't.
