Alright, little help here.

Everytime i try to play decent games, i'll get a few minutes into the game and then my laptop shuts down.. even on min settings it does the same thing.

Also, when i try to update to the latest ATI catalyst, it freezes and shuts down mid install, and i have to do a system restore.

My laptop is an Asus G73JH (pic related), which should be playing most of my games on max flawlessly, instead im having these problems.

The games im trying to play: L4D2, Crysis, Amnesia (though i am yet to see this problem with amnesia, only the others).

Laptop specs:
i7 720QM
8GB Ram (DDR 1033 i think?)
Ati HD 5870
Win 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I've played about 5 minutes of L4D2 on max, and am yet to try and max out crysis. I doubt it is overheating, i'm getting average temps of between 52-55C for the CPU and a max of 57 for the GPU.

That's different then. They'll probably repair it but you might have to pay if it's not warranted when its a Demo

omg, someone else figured this out? that once you buy an Asus product you get VIP membership, and support is world class.
OP, its more than likely overheating and triggering thermtrip to shut down. Asus will more than likely tell you they will repair/replace it at no cost to you, regardless of what is actually wrong. Heres a tip tho, backup all your data before you send it in, because they have no guarantee that they will not have to wipe you HDD.
Asus support rocks. They send me the disassembly manual for my laptop once it was out of warranty so I could fix just this kind of issue, and they even offered to repair it for me, all I had to do was pay shipping there.

Check your BIOS, because therm_trip is adjustable in my M70VM, from 65*C to 85*C. When I bought it was set on the 65*C, and I had to put it on 75*C.

On another note, once I replaced the thermal grease when it went out of warranty, my C2D t9400 idles at 30*C, and the chipset idles at 35*, and the GPU idles around 46*C, so most asus laptops should not get very hot, as they have excellent cooling solutions.

I have that exact computer. You need to install the BIOS and vBIOS updates, it fixes that problem completely. It's the video card overheating because it doesn't throttle itself correctly.

Back, and i couldn't find any options to toggle anything to do with the temp, all i got was security and boot options..

get the bios updates from the Asus VIP website, as its more reliable, and you know its not a fake. They also have the Asusupdate, and EZflash tools on the Asus website for you.

or, my 3 year old Asus M7VM with a Core2Duo T9400, and an Nvidia 9600mGS dedicated card can run WoW at 265fps @ 1920x1200. yea, wow does not take much.
