hey /g/ need a bit of advice.
One of my friends has asked me to update his old gaming pc. it currently has a 5000+ am2 2.6 dual core, an 8800gts 512mb and a measely 1 gig ram.
he's given me a £300 budget to get this to a decent standard. I'm thinking 4gig corsair dominator ram and a 460gtx 1gb or 2gb and new psu. any advice?

Video card might be stretching the limits to be creating a bottleneck at the processor but at least with that when he feels inclined to get a new mobo/cpu it can be carried over to the new system.

Considering the age of the remaining components, why not take your budget budget, and buy budget parts. Dominator is not necessary, something more mid tier like xms would be better. 460 isnt bad, but you could get an AMD card for cheaper I would imagine. PSU only if needed.

isn't the ram on the am2 boards ddr2 and not 3?

tbh i'd suggest your mate adds another £100 to his budget and gets a new cpu/mobo as well...an athlon 640 or unlocking a phenom 555 will be ample for a few years

if you get 600-650w then that leaves a ton of room for future upgrades...make sure any psu you get is active pfc and 80+ rated. check jonnyguru for reviews/info.

if not interested in upgrades, 500-550 is easily fine for a 460

Yup his current MOBO is AM2 and only ddr2 (only 2 slots at that) but I'll convince him to get new mobo and cpu at a later date. 560gtx would take too much of the budget, but thanks for the suggestion.

obviously antec/seasonic/corsair are decent. check out antec earthwatts/corsair cx stuff. the seasonic 520 bronze is excellent but might be pricey....check for it anyway. 80+ rating is essential...i can't stress this enough.

that they're at least 80% efficient at a given load. it's a good indication of quality...the psu industry is a minefield of bs claims and badge engineering. that's why people only suggest antec/corsair/seasonic by and laarge, as (with a couple of exceptions) their products aren't shit.

there are much cheaper options out there for RAM. RAM is RAM, and brand does not play much of a difference if he does not plan to overclock. Get 4GB worth of the cheapest RAM you can find, because it will work. Also, get a GTX460 1GB, and a newer CPU. AM2 socket CPUs can be had for under $50 that are better than that.

it was delta. Back when BFGtech was still in operation, it was the best PSUs on the market, and their OEM was awesome too. i was sad to see it go, but I did get this 1000w PSU on clearance for $50, so i was happy with that. it powers 2 GTX460 1GB, an AMD phenom 955BE, and everything else I throw at it, with ease, and its 80+ gold certified too.

whatever gfx he buys, it WILL bottleneck his CPU.

but you know what, he can just play at a slightly lower resolution and still max out most games today (except crysis 1 and metro 2033).

dont buy NEW ram, buy a cheap used 4GB RAM kit
