Anything better? I'm only using Dev-C++ for the portability, the auto-format thing is rather annoying. Visual Studio is just the first thing I started with.

Please provide a decent argument for your suggestion. No "LOL USE DIS NAO FAGGOT".

not really, VS has probably the best compiler available at the moment, and lots of very nice convenience features like intellisense and smart refactoring. code::blocks is pretty decent tho if you're on a budget

Dev-C++ only runs on Windows, so I have no idea what you're talking about with "portability."

I use eclipse for my java work, it has a c++ plugin that I have used once. I normally use notepad++ for my c work though.

Also, like I've been telling people for the last 5 years, Dev-Cpp hasn't been worked on/updated since late 2004/early 2005. Using it is actually ridiculous.

Vim is an overcomplicated editor, just get something nice and easy like notepad++ and compile with g++

Distributing your work is a nightmare on Windows. A simple 1000-line project:

Windows:

20MB of .dlls packaged in. Nobody in their right mind will trust your binary. Being expected to package up everything in a (likely non-free and/or trial software) installer. Compatibility issues between versions.

GNU/Linux:
========
Distribute source. 200-byte Makefile handles compilation and installing. README file with list of dependencies.

Like many great tools you have to take 15 minutes or so reading the documentation. From that point onwards you will be at least as efficient as using a standard dumblefuck editor and increasing in efficiency the more you use it.

I run Windows. Eventually, however, I am hoping the project itself will be compatible with things OTHER than Windows.

Ah yes, now I'm with you.

With MinGW, you can distribute makefiles that will run anywhere. With code::blocks, you can distribute project files that will also run anywhere.

From personal experience, the largest project I've worked on had
* VS2008 solution
* code::blocks project file, although outdated for some reason
* CMake files
* Linux autoconf/automake stuff
* Eclipse CDT project file

That covers pretty much all the bases, but the first three would be enough.

Then you'll probably want to use a subversioning system and try and rope somebody who actually knows shit about programming (on another platform) into making the necessary changes. You seem like a system"PAUSE") kind of a guy to me.

Git is good and github is a nice host for your repos.

Source + Makefiles are the best way to distribute (and install) software for Linux. If your project is big enough people will package it for you or you can use the free tools yourself to create distro-specific binary packages.

the beauty of autoconf is that it'll whine and moan about missing stuff, and give you good hints about what prerequisites you need to install (if you don't have a package manager doing this for you).

The downside with autoconf/automake is that writing the scripts and makefiles is retardedly hard once the project grows in size, and m4 is about the most annoying language on the planet
