Love Thinkpads but there's no reason to be jelly of one as outdated and common as a T23. T43p and up or GTFO.

The T23 is known for it's reliability though, with 100 bucks into it now-a days, you'll be looking at 8+ hours of life, 1600x1200 resolution, up to 1.32tb of space, and a gig of ram

Don't get me wrong, I used to have a T20 (same chassis, lower specs) and I loved that laptop, but that generation is too outdated today, at least to me.
Fwiw, I paid $350 for my T61. 2.2ghz C2D, 4gb RAM, 250gb HDD, dedicated graphics (nothing crazy but it gets 60fps on Guild Wars), 1440x900 LCD, and it got all the modern Thinkpad niceties (fingerprint reader, keyboard drains, magnesium chassis, ultra-quiet fan, etc).

I have a T42p with a bad heatsink/fan/thermal grease problem (I haven't poked around too much yet).

My parents thought they were being sweet when they got me an Edge. I'm using it to prop up the monitor on my desktop that I haven't used in years. Avoid the 1st gen 14" edge.

Fantastic choice. I never thought I'd be a T-series fanboy, but it's absolutely worth a few more dollars for a nicer screen than some of their other series (curse you Edge). You do have to look at it pretty much every day for the next six or seven years, so I think it's worth it.
