The Gnome3 design actually makes a lot of sense. It distracts the user as little as possible while giving them an easy way to switch and run new applications. If you think about it there is a reason behind every change they made.
The only thing it needs now is some minor changes and making it easier to customize. Everyone don't work the same way, so they need an easy way to customize things. They also need to rethink the design of the applications and try to remove the menubars on the applications that has no need of it. Death to menu bars!
