Finally retired Windows 2000.

I had it running on newer hardware no problem. My last build was in 2009 but I just liked Windows 2000 so much. Everything I had worked just perfectly fine. Resisted XP, Vista, 7... The last year or so started to finally give me problems. Newer programs finally discontinuing compatibility.

My 2013 resolution was to finally retire Win2000 and I am now posting from my new build running Windows 8.

This is some serious retarded shit Microsoft has done but I will get used to it.

What's the longest you have held out on an OS? I used Windows 2000 from April 2000 to January 2013.

Considering it came out in 2001 it's pretty crazy. However, a massive amount of XP machines are running in both businesses and homes.

I still deal with some offices that are running XP machines from the early 2000s. Socket 370 and SDRAM for real.

Still use a bunch of other random programs that have been needed over the years in business.

Using Linux results in headaches. Not everyone wants to spend all day trying to get something compatible that just works in 3 seconds on Windows. Document compatibility, printing, and small things always get messed up.

I've always wondered if there is anything left from the original NT kernel or OS still in use today.

Like how NT 6.0 series is Vista, 7, and 8 and under the hood they are very similar. Anything from NT 3.1 still churning away today? Anything still original or has the entire system been torn down and rebuilt many times over?

Like which programs. Maybe in 2000 all that stuff didn't work out of the box in Linux, but they have since 2005 and actually I doubt printing was ever a problem.

Then other shit throughout the years. Anything requiring .NET framework nonsense, Logitech harmony remote control program, Slingplayer, I don't even know... so much throughout the years.

And printing has always been a problem whenever I have tried. I have had multiple network printers that IPP never worked properly in Linux or other features like the automatic duplex.

I still have two boxes running Win98 SE. Both have Korg Oasys PCI cards installed; Korg never updated the drivers so I'm stuck with Win98 unless I want to switch to Mac OS 9.

But anyway. I used Ubuntu 6.06 for a long time before updating. I was still using it over a year after it was first released, before I updated for some reason. I also used Debian Lenny from when it came out until Squeeze came out, which was about two years.

I think I used Windows 2000 the longest, though, from mid 2002 to the end of 2005.

Windows 2000 was never given the recognition it deserved.

Rarely sold on retail computers. Everything was ME.
Then when ME was a complete disaster Microsoft rushed XP to the market to replace both ME and 2000. Only about a year and a half after 2000 came out.

XP was essentially 2000 with a childish cosmetic scheme.

The original plan was to release the successor to Windows ME and 2000 in 2003 or so. Everything was rushed because of ME so they took 2000 and modified it up.

If you managed to hold on to Win2k for that long, you wouldn't have noticed much of a difference with Wine.
You're just like a friend of mine stuck on XP - unable to embrace change and use it for improving yourself and your workflow.
I was like that for a long time and stuck on XP x64 until last year when it finally decided to do some fancy shit with drivers (standby broke on my laptop). I have never regretted switching, Win7 and Win8 are both so much more useful in the end.

Might be, I don't use it. Win2k has been deprecated for the last 7 years though, so anything would be better. Hell, it doesn't even have any useful standard GUI for connecting to a WLAN, that's how old it is.

The one thing that XP and 2000 do that 7 and 8 don't is have instant access to hard drives from other computers.

When I plug in a hard drive from some other computer, either eSATA or USB, and go into the Documents & Settings or Users folder. XP/2000 goes right in no problem. Vista, 7, and 8 all make me go through the whole YOU DON'T HAVE PERMISSION FUCK YOU and have to wait 20 to 30 minutes for Windows to go through and get permission. I still have no fucking idea why this happens.

OT Windows question: was there ever a version of Vista released on CD? I believe Vista is the oldest version of Windows that supports WPS wifi setup.

I need to instal Windows on a system briefly in order to crack a WPS setup, but I don't have a DVD burner. And I don't have access to any Windows systems otherwise because I'm not a pleb.

I have tried pushing various Linux distros to senile old people who are irresponsible and always end up installing WINDOWS SUPER ANTIVIRUS 2013 PLUS EDITION ULTRA but it always ends badly.

They always come up with some stupid issue that doesn't work and it becomes a complete dealbreaker.

Usually stupid shit like Linux not working with their stupid greeting card software or the Costco photo CD their stupid grandkids sent them.

Windows 9 or 10 could be the last OS most of us ever bother using.

We will just stick with it and be stubborn fools using antiquated technology that doesn't even properly work on the new internet replacement at all.

We will spend millions of dollars (inflation makes $1000000 seem like $1000 today) repairing our old computers because we can not even fathom the thought of buying something new.

Things have changed without you even realizing it.

Look at prices in the 90s. It has become very noticeable. I found an old Pizza Hut menu from 1993 a few months back and the large pizza was $8, regular price.

Not to mention examples like Coke was 5 cents in the 50s.

At the rate we are going hyperinflation is definitely possible.

Oh I know, I used the same code I got from the keygen on literally dozens of computers, so I was just talking out my ass when I said unique. I was actually suggesting unique in that I got it and it is not very likely that anyone else is using that one besides to PCs I myself put it on. Using keys found with google are often found out by MS and shut down every so often. Since this key i generated, not on person has complained about WGA notices.
