[1146264217] My letter to Nintendo regarding Wii

No.9414 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I'm writing this letter as a long time fan of Nintendo games and products. I've owned just about every console you have put out from Nintendo Entertainment System to Gameboy to Virtual Boy to Gamecube. When the Revolution was first announced I was at first curious and questionable about the direction of the Revolution controller and have wanted to see what you actually do with this controller and if you really can entice both your current gamers and non-gamers to your new console.

After the announcement of the official name of your new console though, Wii, i'm going with no. The name of your console should roll off your tongue and feel genuine. Have physical meaning and be easily used in conversation with friends and discussing with others. This name has none of those qualities. It signifies nothing on its own and you literally have to read your page long mission statement specifically made to explain the name to understand it. How is this good marketing? A consumer should be able to quickly establish a connection between a name and a product, it should make sense and be concise with meaning. Not to mention in a lot of regions its easily misinterpreted slang for some rather personal functions and anatomy that a name of a console just shouldn't be associated with.

As a gamer who has bought and enjoyed your products in the past I plead with you to change your name of this console before it launches. Your idea for "disrupting" the industry can be taken only so far before you start distrupting your own plans and console. I know i'm not nearly alone in my thinking on this matter and i'm sure you have probably gotten hundreds or thousands of letters already on this matter and i'm adding my voice to this opposition till it's heard and heeded. I should be proud to want to pick up your console at launch day. I should be proud to walk into a store and ask for a copy of a game on your system, not ashamed or embarrassed to mention the name. Please, do not let this happen.

Thank You
