You have a calculator and a chart, and when you set up in an area, you know the winds and can fire a couple of spotting shots if you're really really lucky. Otherwise, it's down to experience. You and the spotter work out winds and you consult your charts, and you have to be fucking quick about it. I used an SR98 in 7.62x51, and it would drop a bit over distance, but was fairly flat shooting.
As I said, you aim for the chest and they drop like a fucking stone.
Unbelievably, using a .50 (Australian army uses the AW50F) for anti-material use is the hardest...it's a heavy bullet but you have to really aim really high at a distance, and if you start talking a kilometer away, you also have to take into account for different winds at different distances...you look for rags or canvas blowing in the wind, dust willy-willys, or dust kicked up by wheels or mens feet as they walk.
