Grids are a good training tool despite what some of the faggots on /ic/ think. A habit of sighting horizontal and vertical lines across your reference/subject to determine how things line up is an incredibly invaluable skill (find a pdf of The Charles Bargue Drawing Course and leaf through that a bit to get a better sense of what I'm saying).

The biggest reason to not use a grid is that it's WAY more thrilling to work without one. Or that's how I feel.

I remember your piece with the grid, you're really coming along, dude. Very nice stroke economy so far, I can see that you're working from big brushes down to smaller ones.

unfortunately, I do use an eyedropper (terrible habit, definitely do not get into it), but I can tell you that when I use a photo reference (this can also be used in life study, although that's more of a "good eye"/learned ability) and paint traditionally, if I want to find a color for a certain area, I'll get a white sheet of paper with a cutout square in the middle, and place it over the area so the context is white instead of the darker values around it (alternatively, depending onthe values and your base canvas color you can change the value of your context cutout picker) in order to isolate the specific color you want. I then take off my glasses while mixing, and compare the colors until they look the same overall. now, you can also get creative with this and mix blocks of colors that average out to be the same as the other even though they don't appear to be that way, but that's all up to you.

I learned with this piece that I am too lazy to color all of this, so have the lines with a gradient.

I'll color the girl and the sword and post that in a bit.

Also, I should note that this being my third digital piece (and first in photoshop), I ran into a nifty little device called a "magnetic lasso".

Am I retarded for having colored her entire body without having known about it? I got to the sword before I noticed it.

This picture was done with illustrator. i abandoned illustrator though, seemed limiting, although the pen tool is much more robust than photoshop's. seems odd that photoshop is the program for freehand drawing and illustrator not, considering the names.

I use pentool for all my drawings, which lends itself easily to coloring with the paint bucket. Even if I were coloring freehand drawings, I would probably still use the pentool, since the magic lasso just isn't precise enough for me.

Well I've been using Sai for all my lines thusfar (I love that stabilizer). I'm still new to this whole drawing with a tablet thing lol. I take it I should give Photoshop's pen tool out?

i do sketches with my pad and just clean it up with mouse and keyboard.

i would like to use sai because stabilizer seems very effective, but i'd have to spend a lot of time setting it up. gave it a shot today, noticed that eraser on my pen selects shit in sai, and i couldn't figure out how to unselect shit. plus, sai seems to switch my tablet from mousemode over to screen mode automatically which more than irks me, because it makes navigating the interface an awful fucking chore. i'd have to fuss a LOT, but for now i think i'll stick to my current pentool art, despite it looking excessively like web comic art...

I really think the lines look shitty. I don't like your anatomy, proportions and aniderpface either and all but the linework annoys me the most. The lineweight doesn't make sense, what with the random placing of thicker lines and all.

Fair enough, but I like them as they are.

I place thicker lines closer to the foreground and thinner lines closer to the background with varying differences between curves and straight lines. I feel like the small variations help bring the line-works to life. But that's like, my opinion, man.

your technique looks good if you paint directly from a blank file. i'd just make it larger left and right.

the thing when painting digital is to have a huge resolution, so you can zoom in and fuss the details, like reflections and shadows, using the smudge tool to make some gradients and smoother lighting.

-Don't use airbrush to shade. Use a hard brush, and then blend where the shadows soften.
-Shirt folds are awful, get reference
-Pants, even very tight, still have folds and creases, especially around the knees and crotch.
-Find a belt, put it on, notice the end piece left after it's gone through the buckle.
-Moar values. Good shading helps improve the appearance of form.

Hands are pretty sweet, as well as the background. Perk up the values and it could be decent.

Thanks, I really appreciate the input. Especially the bit about hard brushes and blending, I just gave it a shot and I couldn't believe how much better it felt and how much more control I had. I guess I just naturally assumed that a softer brush would lend towards better shadows?

I'll make sure to use reference for the clothing next time and probably touch up the tones a bit. Thanks, again.

Alright then, but I think that a lot of people will share my sentiment. Carry on, it's your 'style' an' all.

Sure, differing thickness to lines is easy on the eyes and a good way to emphasize form in lineart, but in this drawing it just seems as if you thickened lines at random, and it starts getting a little wtfamIlookingat.jpeg.

Yeah, I know. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, I really do appreciate any comments. The brutality of this board has helped me exponentially in the few weeks I've been coming here, in fact.

I'm still new in this town (only picked up drawing anything more than a doodle after I came here). So I do indeed need studies, but I suck with reference pretty hardcore on this particular image. I try not to use references normally, but in this case I'm not sure how I could've done it any better lol

There is no twist in her torso, or at least I hadn't intended such a thing. Her belt is on facing to the side a bit is the only thing I could imagine would give that impression. Or maybe the way I did the lines for the vagina bones? Looking at it now I can see how that might be a bit misleading

Oh well, I'll definitely take everything you said into consideration,

No problem. Rule of thumb is to lay down your basic values (or colors) with a hard brush, zoomed out, to get your form down. Once it's looking good in the macro, then go back and do detailing and rendering.

There are actually two kinds of shadows, cast and contour. Cast are hard-edged and, if long enough, start to fade out the further they get from the source. (Look at the shadows cast from a telephone pole, for example.) Contour are soft, present on rounded objects as they slowly turn further from the lightsource. Do some studies of the shadows on a ball and other simple shapes. You'll know where to put the shadows better if you keep that all in mind. Gl.

sorry for the large photo, any smaller and you wouldn't be able to see anything!! ok, so I'm painting a naked self portrait in oils for my college class. It's huge, Not really sure the size, and it's on mount board because the art store didn't have any canvas board bigger than 60x80.
The thighs are odd in this picture, and since taking it, I have improved them a little..

What kind of fucking class is that?! Seems like a pretty huge violation of privacy. Unless you just chose to do this on your own volition, in which case you are a huuuuge attention whore.

Also, head is way too big and you seem to have lost your feet. And consider the background in your construction, as well.

ahh I my project is about how people are too conservative, in a way.
