I wasn't sure where to put this thread, but I thought this place was best.
I need help with designing clothes when I draw. I enjoy drawing in the anime/manga style, and I can never think of any cool outfit designs. My person's clothes always end up plain and boring.
Can anyone on /ic/ help me? How do you create the clothes for you're characters/people?

I think i have the same problem but it eventually comes. Think of your characters properties and it will start to form in your head. Assemble its accessories first -like sword, staff...- and for example you should arrange a place to carry the sword...try like this.

start with silhouettes. Because you're drawing and you're never going to have to actually sew costumes or anything you can get away with some pretty ridiculous stuff.

It's important to consider the shape of the clothing as it relates to the character more that the actual items some times.

Here was Kevin Chen's way of doing cotume, it consists of 3 layers:
1. Body Type -
This is what the character is born with. Their build, their face, how they hold themselves are all the main focus. People frequently skip this step altogether and thus they have 100 characters whose only defining differences are their face and clothes (and that's boring and shitty)

2. Social Class -
This is the general "shell" of the costume. Basic clothing, no accessories. It shows what the character has inherited essentially. Is he high/low class, and shows time period/genre setting. This is where you do hair btw.

3. Props (Job) -
The last step here is tools that the character needs to do...whatever it is that they do. Go easy on this step, it's easy to overdo it. Most of your character should be clear already. All you're doing now is saying whether he uses a sword or an axe for example.

I think these rules are piece of shit, it doesnt help you drawing the clothes.
just like learning anatomy you must memorise different kinds of clothing, draw shoes, hats, shirts, panties and then use that knowledge on your actual body drawing.

Yeah, i agree this advice is not terrible helpful for actually RENDERING clothes, but OP specifically asked about not giving characters clothes that are plain/boring. This is about clothes creation.

Also, those aren't rules by any means. It's just a way ONE person (albeit a very successful and talented person) like to conceptualize the design process. it won't work for everybody nor should you expect it to. Everyone's design process is different but OP doesn't seem to have a design process AT ALL, so you've gotta start somewhere.

Also silhouettes are used very widely in most character/creature/mech designs almost across the board.
