What's your art program of choice, /ic/?

I know a lot of people use different programs for different things, so I'm willing to hear what causes your personal discrepancies. Also, I'm mostly interested to hear if you use a particular version (of Photoshop, OC, Painter, etc..).
I've always wondered why certain artists swear by Photoshop 4.0 or 6.0 or don't like the more recent versions of Painter.
Or maybe you're the type of person who just pirates the latest version without bothering to weigh the pros and cons?

Tried to use Painter, but could never get past the learning curve. Also tried OC for a while, and didn't like it as much as SAI. Sometimes I also use Oekaki.

I used to hate painter X, finally got over the learning curve and now it's my favorite program. For inking and coloring it kicks the shit out of photoshop CS3 and has more abilities then sai, but for technical stuff and really finishing my artwork I need photoshop. They are a good team and i use both on artworks.

I haven't used painter in ages and have mostly moved on to focussing on ps and illustrator, but from what I remember a lot of people were pissed when painter got rid of some of its features post version 7 like.. "add water" or some such rubbish (forgive me. like I said, it's been a while since I used painter, and can't quite remember the names of its tools).

I use Photoshop because Photoshop is all I need and is better than any other program. The learning curve is there for a reason because once you know the software you pretty much can do anything.

More recently I am using less and less digital tools in general, and I have concentrated on upping my traditional media skills, using photoshop as support rather than the central tool. Digital inking bugs me too much to even consider.

I love photoshop, but you're a retard for thinking it's the only worthwhile program. Photoshop was not made for drawing freehand, i was made for refining and editing photos. Painter has so many abilities for color theory and realistic drawing only the retard who doesn't branch out to other programs could say so.

freehand drawing is more so based on physical ability and skill if you're comparing painter, photoshop, sai or open canvas to one another, assuming you're on a functional machine. the latest iterations of photoshop do have functions and options specifically designed for artists who draw freehand.

as for painter supposedly having more options for "realistic drawing" and color theory, i disagree. painter has a bunch of cheesy brushes that try unsuccessfully to emulate real media i think. color theory isn't something you should approach on a computer monitor imo and the color mixer painter has is pretty useless from my experience with it. but regardless i love both painter and photoshop and i use what i'm comfortable with.

But even on a capable machine you have to admit that Photoshop is utterly retarded at tracking a pen sometimes (especially if you're drawing at 50% magnification--when you zoom in it's always these fucked up mechanical zig-zags that have less to do with an unsteady hand and more with PS's inability to follow the pen well).

I use Painter IX,5 and Photoshop CS2. If I want to go for more painterly look and just sit and draw I use Painter, however when I want to have real control over the layers and colors I choose Photoshop. It's easier to tweak and transform stuff already drawn in Photoshop.

From what I've seen anybody who learns how to use painter skillfully does not think it's a bunch of 'cheesy brushes'. Those people also tend to have a portfolio of traditional medium, by contrast to people using photoshop relying on tablet magic.

But what's wrong with using both? You're not betraying photoshop, most of you didn't even pay for it.

Really? It's a common complaint from what I've heard. I used to think it was just my computer but I'm still having issues with it after I got a new one (top-the-line current generation iMac, shouldn't be an issue of specs).

Mac bashing aside, I don't see why that'd be an issue. Again it's not like the specs aren't high enough or PS isn't a Mac-native program. I've had the exact same problem with it on a quad-core Mac Pro before too.
