Hello /ic/,

How does one paint believable rock/ridge/stone and stuff alike? I've been trying to figure out for weeks now.

So what makes rock look like rock? value & hue difference? shapes? detail? Usually in a painting you can do Anything with just colors and simple shapes, but fuck, doing rock or stone that way looks just out of place or a random splat of color.

You can paint anything and everything with just default hard round, sometimes it takes longer though, Imo its best to stick with default hard round or simple brush's because it forces your to actually learn something about a form of an object. Not that theres anything wrong with textured brushs

As for the rocks generally they arnt smooth they are very angular and sharp ull want to go with a hard edge brush and avoid bluring the edges. Value wise it depends on what type of rocks you are going for, its best to get some reference.

Not that rocky and angular but you still identify it as rock/stone/cliff. Has almost none characteristics but still you can easily see that it's rock. This is the part i haven't got yet.

Well it still rocky and angular but its viewed from further away so the details are smaller u'd just have to keep an eye on your values.

If those are your best efforts in your pic I really dont see the problem you are having tbh.

Remember that everything in the shadow areas should not be soft. By doing too many soft edges you make the rock look less angular and more splotchy. Just gradiations in the shadow to describe reflected light.

Op here. I've got it now.

note: you CAN paint anything with only color. In the end it comes to the accurate balance between the color of shadow and light. Shape and surface are to strengthen the object.

Pic related (really old one from me, didn't understand it then and went with just by the feeling), the darker areas on the boulder are reddish and lights are of cyan and blue. Giving the object an average tint of slightly bluish grey, thus giving the impression of rock as a material.

I think i've improved a lot with this and gained a lot of useless arrogance. Sorry about that.

Maybe adding stuff like little plants or trees to give a hint about the size of the rock helps to make it more real. The little guy on the mountain and the grass in the green one help a lot.
