Anyone got any experience creating textures?

I'm trying to create a texture for this set of pavement tiles, but it's fucking annoying as hell. As you can see from the pic i'm using the offset method to make sure it tiles seamlessly, but then the middle bit is fucked up and since each block is roughly the same size, i'm having trouble maintaining the edges so that it tiles properly and editing the middle bit. Anyone got any tips?
