Any professional illustrators up in /ic/?
I'm trying to decide if I should be a graphic designer or an illustrator. I'm rather experienced at graphic design and not so much at illustration. So I ask you /ic/, what is the life of an illustrator like? Does it pay well? Is the work fulfilling? I was thinking work more along the lines of concept art for video games and such but I'm not entirely sure.

I was told going into graphic design that I would get a flavour for everything while in the field. While it's true I got in some good illustration and typography classes, they were being presented to me and applied in a very different way than an illustrator would be using.

As far as concept art, which I am also planning to do and ultimately switched major's for, I would recommend a major in either animation or game art.

I would also like to point you towards an artist I very much aspire to be like.

I'm a Graphic Design major and I've decided that this is my field. I haven't gone out to work for pay yet but, uh... I'll tell you what I do know.

You get paid average. You do NOT make a killing. The ladies at the printshop I interred with made a little over $12, maybe $13 an hour? That plus some commission based on time spent designing, I think. They worked full-time.

The work is bland if you don't go for a high-end advertising job and go for a low-end one like the one at a printshop. I was basically editing names for the "Return to" section of envelopes and redoing prescription pads for doctors the entire time I was at my internship. The most thrilling thing I had to do was either the company newsletters that came along or my last assignment, an inventory sheet from scratch.

No matter what, really, in Graphic Design you'll be designing things for other people. Very rarely will you ever get free reign on something (like a car ad or whatever) and even if the guy is like "I dunno, do what you want" if you do what you want and give it back to him, he will often go "This isn't want I wanted at all!" and tell you to re-do it. A lot.

I still like this field because even though it's doldrum work (mostly, sometimes you get gems), it's plentiful work and it keeps you busy and the day flies by before you know it.

If you're in art for the whole ZOMG CREATIVITY aspect rather than just "I'm here to design and make money," then Graphic Design might not be your thing.

That was my problem with majoring in graphic design. Not enough of the kind of creativity I was hoping for. When I found out that we were supposed to draw a car in Illustrator and make fake ads for the big three car companies ( I live near Detroit), I dropped the class entirely. Just not my thing, man.

Also a little fyi sudios hate HATE digital art. They also hate concept artists. do you know why? because all concept artists can do is "concept art". If you plan to be a concept artist, you need to be an artist first, concept second. if you can show you can do more then just concept art, like fine art ect you have a much higher chance at getting a job.

basicly companies can train you to use the computer ect, but they cant teach you art.

All art is art, good or bad. That's trivial.
But concept artists usually get stuck in their aesthetic preconceptions. For book and magazine illustration, you need versatility. For comics and animation, you need a grasp of rhythm and sequence. For posters, you need the ability to simplify to the barest essentials. For information graphics, you have to distill verbal concepts to images. Concept artists don't have the pressure to learn any of these. Sure, some do (I even know some), but they're the exception rather than the rule.

to say that they can teach you how to use a computer but can't teach you art is like saying that they can teach you how to oil paint, but can't teach you art. it's just a different medium. you can say all paint looks the same, too.

There IS other types of conceptart out there, just the ones you're talking about is the more popular and easily appreciated genre.

I was just asking what it's like to be an illustrator, I have no idea except for the classes my friends take. We all know school =/= RL. I'm pretty good at drawing and I enjoy it but I got into design because and I'm not enjoying it as much anymore (and I've seen design firms).

tl;dr op is better at graphic design but enjoys hobbiest drawing and thinks concept art would be cool to do.

I finished my graphic design course in the summer, I wrote my dissertation on he mixture of graphic design and illustration.
do graphics, but do illustration on the side. once you are more experienced with illustration, mix the two together a bit.
check out Rinzen, they do graphics in a very illustrative way and check out Hotel Fox in Copenhagen for more nice design/illustration/art.
get the book for xmas.
