I want to stop drawing anime, I still want to draw in a semi-realistic style though, and I can't seem to be able to do that without people calling it anime.
can you give me some examples or artist names that draw semi-realism that is not anime?

I'll dump the works of a few of my favourites. They all technically do work related to /a/ or Japanese /v/, but their styles are quite extraordinary in my opinion.

The first one is Ayami Kojima, probably best known for her works on Castlevania.

More Kojima.
Probably her most iconic work. Dem palette knife textures. I'm positive there are step-by step scans of her painting techniques out there. I'll try to track them down.

One of the countless of inconsistencies with the "anime style" stereotype. I remember back in art school when a friend of mine got called out on his sculpture being "anime style" because the character has a scarf.

When people call your stuff "anime", it only shows their limited knowledge in art. Of course, this is an epidemic that's not gonna change anytime soon (sadly). No matter what style you choose to draw, whether stylized or realistic, it'd do you good, no, it is your responsibility to demonstrate technical skills that separate the serious artists from those who want instant approval.

Anyway, have some Naoyuki Kato.

I... don't get it, are you trying to say that Kojima's works are consistent with the generic anime art style? I guess it's pointless to argue since no one can agree on what "generic anime style" is.

I pretty much mean that if you're a serious artist, just ignore the people who pass your art off as "anime style". Show them somebody like Ayami Kojima, who's style doesn't fall under the stereotype, and when they even as much as think that its "not anime style" it's proof enough that they don't know what they're talking about.

learn to comprehend what you read. he's saying that you should not care if people calling your works anime such as anime although a style has a lot of variety.

and why would you care if people call it anime anyways? does it degrade the way you look at your work? do you draw for their sake? as long as you are constantly studying to improve your work pay no heed to others dragging you down.
