For example, this guy:

2 years of drawing frequently and his work is still not great and there is very little improvement. This is just one example, there are many sketchbooks on CA that are similar to his... Is this proof that talent IS required to draw successfully?

Getting better at drawing can take a long time, but there's usually some sort of tipping point around the 3-4 year mark(of serious study) where everything starts comming together and your practice starts to pay off.

But yeah, I think that guy is just mentally deficient in some way, so is not really a good example.

but he is actually trying to learn anatomy, perspective etc. It's not like he's drawing anime vampire demon furries for his DA. He IS serious about his art or so it seems to me after I glanced over his sketchbook.

It depends on the kind of classes the guy is taking. All the greats, ALL, had some tutor/critic/guide to help them out. No one shits out great work. Art is all about experience and expanding on your techniques/tools. Without a guiding hand, the isolated artist, at best, can retain technique without meaning or style (I don't mean art style, I mean pizzaz/mojo/flava/whatever the fuck you want to call it).

I'm not saying someone can't be self-taught and be good. I'm saying an artist can grow in leaps and bounds with a good teacher and mentor.

This guy obviously has no one to really help him/her/it out.

Seems like the guy never learned basic ideas about gesture and composition. Only studying anatomy and perspective is like learning to cook by just studying pots and pans.

Eh, skimming over that thread, it seems like the guy is very young, and posts whatever shit he puts to paper. He definitely hasn't had any meaningful instruction. LOL, he says he has Burne Hogarth's Dynamic Anatomy, why is about as useful to a beginner as a kick in the dick.
