I was just wondering. I'm starting the recording of my first EP with my band this saturday, and we'd like to release it for free (or pay what you want) on bandcamp.

The point is, every one of us suck at art (and at finding band names.)

So, does someone know how does this usually work ? Is it expensive to have someone make an artwork for you (knowing that we probably won't get any money from this, but we will for sure credit the artist) ? What does the artist need to know ?

Well, look at Radiohead, their artwork seems to be in line with their music. There are several musicians who'd rather make the covers themselves. You need someone who can appreciate your music, knows a thing or two about artistic renderings/interpretations and graphic design. You also need to be able to explain them what the underlying message of your music is. If you don't know them personally you need to be able to pay them compensation you both agree on regardless of non-profit.

if i were you, I would be very liberal with them and allow them full rights of creative content (typical in most fields outside of production/concept art), a set % royalty on any profits made from selling the album (whether digital or hard copy), and at least a small royalty advance.

if you are a small-time band with no funding, i'd expect to pay a minimum of $500 from a generous professional. on your end, the process typically involves the artist showing some tight sketches of what you request for you to choose from, followed by more polished versions of the sketch (where you ask for revisions if you want), and a finished piece of art.

just remember that just because you would be willing to do a gig for a six pack of PBRs, doesn't mean that a visual artist is willing to work for nothing. you have the admiration of the crowd/fans to gain from a free gig, while an artist really stands to gain next to nothing, if he/she isn't paid. "exposure" means nothing unless that exposure is in the form of showing your art to a multitude of paying clients. otherwise, doing the art is a failed investment in business terms. artists need to eat, too.

if you don't expect to pay up, don't expect a quality product.if you know any artists that really dig your music and can get behind it, the fine. just know that you are exploiting them by asking to work for free.

You should have a some friend with a design sense you can bribe with a few cases of PBR. If you are asking a stranger, you should offer some compensation, anyone who would work for credit, you could do just as well. If in doubt, keep it simple, There is nothing wrong with a bit of text in a standard font, and a basic photo, or blank background.

If not, I guess we'll have to go with the photo then, even though I'm not pretty sure i'd fit the styl.e

Just to remind you, using photos off the internet without permission is stealing, so if the artist finds out you're using his stuff without his permission, you're facing a lawsuit.

we're doing it just because we wanted to have our stuff well recorded, and once we'll have it, why not releasing it online ? Especially knowing that we'll have to stop the band for a year or two since some of us have to move for their studies...
