What kanji dictionary should I get? I've been meaning to buy Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary (pic related), but I've heard it uses incorrect stroke orders for some radicals. For instance, in 空, the top radical is five strokes, while this dictionary lists it as three (making the bottom one five instead).

So, should I get this one anyway, or some other dictionary?

Why do you need a dead tree version? Electronic dictionaries have yet to fail me for all my Japanese needs.

Get an electric one, they're crazy expensive, but good

Better yet, get all the professional quality software, ebooks and databases you can find, and get a nice netbook.

I just love this site, check it out: http://www.edrdg.org/cgi-bin/wwwjdic/wwwjdic?1R (that's the kanji lookup page, also check out the dictionary). There's no reason to bother with a cumbersome written dictionary, it takes fucking ages to find the one Kanji you're looking for and this is where this site comes into play. If your Kanji is in textform anyway, just look it straight up. If you have to find your Kanji by radicals, use the page I've linked to.
I just saved you 60$ you would have regretted spending, you can thank me later

as a light reference, yes

but it pales in comparison with even the cheapest electronic dictionaries

Note that I will use the dictionary for not only general lookup (at least whenever a computer is unavailable), but also for exams. In Norway, we are allowed to use general dictionaries, kanji dictionaries (printed, electonic or the DS one) and grammar dictionaries during the exam. I doubt they'd let us use a laptop, though.

How expensive are decent electronic dictionaries? Do they include both kanji and vocabulary lookup, so that one will be able to replace both a Japanese-English/English-Japanese and a Kanji dictionary?

It's actually written with 宀and 儿, but by the bushu system, which as I understand is the norm for Japanese dictionaries, 空 is under 穴.

I don't see why you'd want to use a paper dictionary for kanji, because looking them up is going to suck by any system.

The SKIP system is alright if you come across really complicated kanji. If you aren't sure of how many strokes there are in each section, you can vary counts and quickly go through the lists in the register.

As such, the online SKIP code finder is not nearly as useful:

Even with this dictionary though, to lookup a kanji I prefer to draw it or use radical lookup.
