As long as there is written literature, there will be those subtleties.
Japanese is not that bad. It was just fucked over royally when they stole kanji.
The kanji isn't even that bad.
My mother tongue for speaking is Chinese (Cantonese), but I can't write chinese at all, so I had to learn kanji from scratch other than the obvious 500 or so. English is a second language to me that I learned like a native without textbooks and speaking only.

I often saw 10-15 different ways of saying 'new' words like tank, magic caster, pulling etc.
and all of those don't really mean the same thing as sadness. They were made up to focus on certain aspects of the feeling being described.
The example they always use in ESL is smart, clever, intelligent, sharp and bright, while they might throw in stuff like acumen, wisdom/wise, or astute.
