The plan is to equip a group of between 50-100 men and overtake a small nation called Equatorial Guinea off the western coast of Africa.

GDP of 24 billion last year, where 70% of the population lives below the UN $2/day poverty line.

Look it up on wikipedia and you'll see why we'll have an easy time.

Without going into too much detail, I inherited an obscene amount of money from my father after his early passing in 2004. I had the same dream as many of you as young men - to own an island - so I bought one. But I didn't stop there, as my dream went just as far as yours. I hired a rather large and expensive group of laborers in all fields, to set up a small but completely sustainable nation-state.

There is already a completed and modernized "suburb" of sorts (though I prefer to call it a village) that is located within decent walking distance of what will be the Capitol. Work has been completed on the Capitol Building, which is rather modest and reflects a commitment to small government, and we have now moved on to constructing essential places of business and other infrastructure.

I have convinced enough of the workers to remain after the project is completed, to ensure that things are maintained. Also, I am assuming that many of the people who eventually live here will have the proper skill sets to support a small community. Having a proper job/trade/skill is essentially mandatory for citizenship, as we will not be large enough at first to afford people not contributing.

At the moment it's a bit surreal to visit the site - I always feel like the old man from Jurassic Park, and it's a good feeling. We're looking at completion by summer of 2015, at which point all details will be made public and applications for citizenship reviewed.

I'd be more than happy to answer questions that aren't "where is it so I can go squat there?". I'm also open to suggestions on a Name and Flag (I'm ambitious, but not incredibly creative).

Adopting a name for convenience.

The island was purchased for roughly $5 Million US, split between myself and my investment partners. As a result it is not very large, but I assure you it's quite beautiful.

Most of the construction and labor work is being overseen by my primary partner, but the total costs of paying the people involved, importing the materials needed, and constructing everything to comfortable modern standards has taken us $20m over the years. Honestly I would not have been able to do this without the support of a few other wealthy friends and investors, who are mostly interested in the island as vacation real-estate.

And as per your joke - hey, there's no reason to invade! You guys will be welcome with open arms if your applications clear. We'll need people like you to form an organize security organizations and regular militias.

At the moment, we actually do have something of a navy, but it's hilariously enough a small group of what are basically pleasure yachts with weapons mounted on them. We're working on it.

Citizenship will be based entirely on merit, though I'm not so idealistic as to say "anyone gets in". The population will likely be majority white because of the countries we're drawing interest from. Also, speaking English will be required, but beyond that anyone is technically welcome.

It's all perfectly modernized - you'll have just as much contact as you do now. Naturally it's satellite-based, as the logistics of running fiber optic cables through the ocean makes my head hurt.

I've spent a lot more than I'd originally planned on making it very comfortable. I want people to feel like they're living in a clean, modern, new city - they just happen to be on a beautiful island while doing it.

I didn't mention it - but we have a harbor and one of the last things built will be a small but serviceable airstrip.

Seriously, no one's got ideas for a name or a flag? It's the one thing that's really killing me!

Think of 1 or two words that describe the island, and translate them to latin.

As for the flag, keep it simple and clean. Max 3 colours, ideally just 2.

A combination of both was deemed to be best. There is some talk of creating bio-diesel for work equipment, but I honestly don't know if they're still working on that. We're making the deals to import gasoline, but as a general rule we will be trying to stray from it as much as possible. "As Free as We can Be" is a common motto going around, and relying on foreign imports too much goes against that.

After a bit of research into flag design, I'm consider of a simple European style Tri-Color design, either vertical or horizontal bars, with some color combination nobody has used yet. Alternatively, a single Gold star in the middle of a blue field to symbolize our status as a shining beacon on the waters.

I suppose if I had to pick one word it would be "freedom" or "prosperity" but those seem awfully cliche. It is, however, the principle we're building on.

The colors of the flag should be symbolic, and the emblem should be something instrumental to the island.

ex: Mozambique's flag has an AK-47, because that won their war. Commie flags are red, because of communism.

By that criteria, I'm leaning towards "Gold star on Blue Field". Blue for the ocean that surrounds us, and the star simultaneously for the Nation itself, and also our ultimate ambition: attracting private aerospace.

It's a distant dream, but we expect within the next decade that we will grow, and so will private aerospace. Several island nations are already in bids for contracts to house spaceports, which we believe will become very lucrative in the near future.

It's something we've been very serious about since Day 1, and from all the research and work we've done I would say we are in a fantastic position to offer a spaceport.

Of course we're not staking our entire existence on it, and we will be absolutely fine economically if we don't get that deal.

There is a lot of interest in leaving the United States right now - way more than we were expecting. This is a system that we're still working on, but there is no "fee" to immigrate to the island. In creating our housing we consulted several people and came up with a system of various sized domiciles, ranging from standard units for just one person all the way up to large families. To own, or to rent, but will be considerably less expensive than what you pay in the States (or anywhere else, likely). The truly essential things - priority will be given to the likes of doctors, electricians, farmers, those with construction or engineering backgrounds, people who can make things. We're working on it, though I admit it's still a bit of a hurdle. I will however guarantee that by the time we "go live" you'll be able to send and receive snail-mail fairly easily (for being on an island). Considering the topography and weather of the island, it needs to be something rugged and proven in that kind of terrain. We had considered the trusty AK-variants, and that remains the most popular option, but we have the funds to spring for fancier options. The question is whether or not that's worth it.

The only engagements we'll have would be pirates, and even that is highly unlikely. I'm of the opinion that a simple quality bolt rifle may be sufficient.

As far as bolt actions, it severely limits your rate of fire, especially if gunfights with pirates are possible. Their firearms can of course be confiscated though

We would like to eventually, but it's not a priority at first. We'll declare our sovereignty initially, but I imagine it will be a while before we're recognized, but it's possible. I'll admit that I don't know the exact process. If anybody does it would be much appreciated.

Long-term plans include gaining recognition and brokering trade with New Zealand and Japan. The State of Hawaii was considered but we are not going to become entangled with the United States.
