Shock is commonly misused by the lay public. Most people in the public think 'shock' refers to a mental status change of confusion or panic, but this is not true. If anything, this type of mental status change denotes decreased blood flow to the brain secondary to the real, hemorrhagic shock.
True shock, that you will see on a battlefield, will be due to hemorrhage, be it outside of the body or into a body cavity. The treatment is volume replacement, in the form of normal saline (start two large bore IVs and bolus both), or packed red blood cells with appropriate type and cross or O negative until the blood bank has typed and crossed the patient.
You will need to take the patient to the OR, then locate and stop the source of the bleeding; the faster you do this, the better the prognosis.
