Any LE guys out there? Just wondering how your career was going and what it entails. How was the entrance portion? Whats a day in the life of a LE agent/officer? I figured most people on /k/ had some sort of background in LE, Military, or atleast knew someone close to home in it.
Reason being is because I'm looking forward into getting into LE myself in a few years once I've finished grad school. Doing a double major in poly sci and crim. justice.

not a cop but i am a correction officer (not a guard we are a state agency and we are peace officers)

good pay great time off and good retirement (better then nyc cops), being stuck inside a class A max 8 hours a day does blow but i get to mess with stupid inmates from the city

Is the pay good enough to support yourself rather well and have nice things too? Car,apartment,electronics,etc.? Whats a regular day like for you? Glorified bouncer? Not taking a shot, seriously curious.

we bullshit cook play cards etc you know keep security oriented

pays alright i just bought a new 40 grand truck pays the bills and supports my gun habbits could be better thou

you fail fbi psychological kiss the LE field good bye that follows you around. thats why fbi should be a last choice imo

i know for a parole officer in NY a 4 year degree in anything is needed and thats it

my crim justice schooling helped me for shit in the academy since they teach you everything there (legals week, firearms, etc etc)

it has the good and bad. pretty much to start, you need to be in excellent physical condition, memorize the law book, and shoot decent. After you pass, you just need to "fit in the car" and be able to walk, know a little law, and shoot decent every year to pass the shooting test.

Good:
*Starting pay $55k/year
*All required uniforms/gear supplied
*Get to play "God"
*you can retire after 25 years of service (and some places will count up to 6 years of military time towards this! example: 4 years army + 21 years police = retire full benefits!)

Bad:
*shift work, work on weekends/holidays
*if your suspect is drunk and barfs in your cruiser, you get to clean it up
*dangers of getting shot, poked by a drug needle, dog attack, car accident
*paperwork and documentation! yuck

bump. local PD is hiring, wondering what a college dropout could do in LE. I think I'd rather be a detective than a beat cop, but I doubt you can go right into it.

yup ill be looking at with just this contract almost 50 grand a year to wake up when i hit 25 years + the great unionized health care unless i go out on a injury and get more + disability (lol)

90% of jobs that pay livable wages in the US require that you plan for your own retirement, as retirement to them is just a fancy way of saying "I quit". also, they usually require 30 years in, iirc.
