Good evening, /k/. I've come across a lot of options in my future. I just turned 18 a few days ago, and I've yet to go to college. I'm literally a clean slate. I'm not in debt, I don't have any hang ups regarding family or anything, they all seem to support me and all for whatever I want to do. They just want me to do something, anything. I've always considered the Army. I come to /k/ because of the fact that people from different branches appear to frequent here. I've done a lot of thinking, and I'd rather join the Army than anything else. Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard, all of it seems like it's over hyped based on all these recruitment commercials. I want to be infantry, really. A lot of stuff might be cushioned in other positions, but I'd feel like all I was doing is coasting through my deployment. I'm not asking for a whole lot, /k/, but I'm just asking for some advice. To keep it weapons related, if I were to join, what would I be issued as a weapon?

Dude, pick something useful. In spite of whatever you may be thinking now, you will not make a career out of the infantry. Pick an MOS that'll transfer to a useful job skill for when you get out.

Even as an infantry 90% of your time will be spent doing the most boring things you can imagine. The other 10% is field problems, NTC/JRTC and maybe a few firefights/getting blown up.

Optics and stuff that can be mounted on rails, essentially.

Oh look, I made a thread and it turned into a shitfest of "That stuff weighs down your gun!" "No it helps kill people better!". I just wanted a thread on what to expect if I joined the army.

There seem to be a lot of milfags on right now, so if you ask a pointed question you'll probably get an answer.

>>8766062 Oh relax, skippy. We're just having a little fun. You take shit way to seriously.
When I was infantry, they loaded me up with an M4 that had an M68 (Aimpoint CompM2), a PEQ-15, a fuckhuge surefire, and a grippod. Half of it, I didn't even fucking want. Sure, some of it would have come in handy if I wasn't Stryker vehicle crew for my whole deployment... but I had a goddamn M2 at my disposal. If I was using my M4, something had gone horribly, horribly wrong.

Sign up and figured it out for yourself, or perhaps use google FFS. I really am starting to think these are more of a "congratulate me for wanting to join the services" then an actual quest for real information.

OP here.
I'm going to ask a pointed question like
>>8766076 said to do.
I want to join the army. What should I expect equipment wise? Do they issue shotguns? Sorry for asking what might be considered stupid questions, I've done a bit of research, but I'm still pretty in the dark.

>>8766098 Not that i'm asking for a "look at me! I'm special for joining the military!", I just would like a bit of information. I've used Google, but i'd rather ask actual people rather than have a search engine just vomit information to me

>>8766100 Your standard issue weapon will most likely be an M4 or an M16A4. They will sometimes issue a Mossberg to one soldier in a squad when overseas for breaching and shit. They will usually issue M9 pistols to senior enlisted, officers, medics, and 240 gunners. One soldier in a fire team will be issued an M249 SAW, another will be issued an M4 with an M203 attached, the other two just get regular ol' M4s. Squad designated marksmen often receive M16A4s, sometimes M14s, rarely M110s (usually reserved for actual snipers, at least in my old unit).

That'll vary a lot. You'll at least get some body armor, an ACH, an M4 with trimmings, a camelbak and an adjustable LBV. You'll also be given a basic clothing issue, which is some uniforms, boots, etc.
Shotguns? No. Not that I'm aware of.

>>8766124 Thank you, this is what I was looking for in terms of equipment. I know this could have been done with google, but I like actually getting an answer from a real person

And for fuck's sake, if you simply must enlist as an infantryman, at least have a plan to reclass at some point down the line. Get something out of the Army. The Big Green Weenie will take every opportunity to fuck you hard and fast, so the least you can do for yourself is put it to work for you.
