Chicago is renowned for having 'the voting dead', gerrymandering is rampant to fix districts to bias towards certain parties (Both sides do this, fuck you partisans from each camp), and even assuming you get someone elected who is what you want, there are 434 other people who can simply ignore you. Congress has even ignored what people say. See: USA PATRIOT Act, Gitmo, HCR, etc.
Senators and Representatives have managed to thoroughly insulate themselves.
McCain Feingold and FEC basically give the sitting member +10% at the polls, so we have people with a twenty year tenure in Congress like Rangel or Reid.

I haven't given up on voting, but I am under no illusion that I am doing fuck all.

yes, exactly, THE CITIES. which dominate the country. do you not realize that the reason for cities, for increased population density, to exist is to better control people?
