>>8769030There were more Hurricanes, and sure, it was a great (and thoroughly underrated aircraft), but look at the numbers:
Hurricane - issued to 34 squadrons
Spitfire - issued to 19 squadrons
If there's nearly twice as many Hurricane squadrons, then why is the spitfire the more well-known aircraft? Because it made a difference, that's why.
The Hurricane couldn't keep up in a tail chase with a 109, and its guns did NOT guarantee a kill with one burst at dog-fight speeds.
The Spitfire on the other hand had thinner wings and was a helluva lot faster than the Hurricane, increasing the chance of a kill in a dogfight. It was also lighter and had a stronger hull, making it more agile and better able to stand up to punishment.
The Hurricane was a GOOD fighter, but the Spitfire was GREAT.
