Okay, I am basically a newfag to /k/. I usually take my time lurking /v/ and /g/, but I have been wanting to start becoming a /k/ regular. I have always been fascinated with firearms, ever since I was little I would always want to hold or touch my dads handgun (Police Officer) and I have always looked up guns in history and weapons in general, big weapon freak. The thing is, I don't know much about firearms, just their place in history and names. Anything I should know? Basics of anything I should learn before becoming a regular? I live in South Carolina where the gun laws are a little loose, but it's a no-tolerance state when it comes to crime, especially my county. Basically I have been looking at buying a firearm, I am pretty sure all handguns, rifles, and shotguns are non-licenses, just a background check, but I was wondering what i'd have to learn in order to get more permissions as far as firearms go. Also, whats a good first gun for me? I was looking at a Colt 1911 or a Glock 19 for a handgun.

If your dad is a cop, than why the hell arn't you asking him? Get advise and range time with him. Also, don't listen to these fags preaching .22s. Unless you're like 7, I think you can handle a normal rifle.

As an added bonus, .22 lr is the single most common ammunition in the US, and rimfire guns tend to be the cheapest.
But hey, listen to who you want.

When they checked him out they didn't see anything really bad with him, he had a broken wrist but that was about it, but he died not too long after he was released because one of his ribs splintered and caused internal bleeding without the doctors knowing.

OP? Please: 1) Get a .22 semi-auto. The Ruger Mk II (pictured) is generally acknowledged to be the handgun of choice in this field. The Ruger 10/22 is a good little carbine if you want a longarm, but it sounds more like you want a pistol. .22 semis are fun as hell, because you can rattle off shots like a hero in a John Woo flick and not hurt your hand or your ears, and actually hit the target on subsequent shots. 2) Go get your state's Hunter Safety Exam and look over the materials. It'll tell you everything you ned to know about safe handling and storage. 3) Practice. Handguns are assfuckingly hard to actually hit anything with. Start with big targets up close, then work your way out. This will be facilitated by the fact that your Mk. II will not kick and you can buy like 500 rounds for $20. Welcome to the shooting sports. Have fun. Stay safe. And give us a range report when you make your first purchase.

Don't start with a handgun and don't start with something you can't afford to feed. .22lr and 7.62x54r is going to be your bread and butter. .223 and 7.62x39 isn't unreasonable, but prices have skyrocketed since Obamamania bullshit. It's handy to chose a caliber that can easily be found in surplus spam cans. 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r are good for this, as Russian and Czech ammo is plentiful. For the sake of training, a .22 is going to be teach you good habits because you won't have to worry about flinching or bracing for the recoil of a heavier round. If you are interested in slow-fire accuracy, a bolt-action like a Marlin or Cz will be best. However, there is a lot of fun to be had from a semi-automatic 10/22 or even a pump or lever action. The Henry Golden Boy is one of the funnest little guns I've ever shot.

Once you are confident with your .22 and you've developed good safety and maintenance habits, you can go to a gunshow and pick out a Mosin Nagant. Do some research online so you know what to look for and mull over every M91/30 on the show floor. Bring a flashlight and inspect the bore. Don't be afraid to look down the muzzle while shining a light on the breach. Find a solid feeling one with a good bore and matching serial numbers and the full accessory kit (bayonet, sling, ammo pouch, oil bottle, cleaning kit and take-down tool) and don't pay more than $130 for it. Try to pick up a spam-can full of 7.62x54 for $100 on the way out. Eventually you are going to want an assault rifle. This is when you are going to reach a turning point as a shooter. You are either going to want to spend most of your time at the bench, carefully placing impeccable groups at the 100yard line, or you are going to spend most of your time in the woods shooting pumpkins and mowing down trees. This is when you choose if you want an AR-15 or an AKM. Sometimes life makes this decision for you and all you can afford to do is buy a cheap WASR 10/63 and bum around your buddy's private hunting land, this is ok. One more thing, have you thought about a shotgun? A Mossberg 500 is a great first gun because it is so cheap and versatile. You can use it for home defense, hunt a wide variety of game, shoot clays and you can even convert it to a .50 muzzle loader.

>>8772049 Dude, every air rifle/pistol I have ever shot has had a trigger that feels nothing like a rifle trigger. It is an unnecessary step, especially since a .22 bolt action rifle will run OP 100 bucks at most, the ammo is super cheap, and .22 has almost no recoil. I honestly don't see the point in starting someone off with an air rifle.

And in case any beginner Eurofags are reading this: The rules over here differ per country. For the Netherlands it's like this: You need to be a member of a firing range for at least a year and need to have experience in the caliber you're using. That means if you go to a range that only supplies .22 you won't be able to get that mosin nagant you'd want or that SKS you saw mounted on a wall. Also you're allowed to get 5 weapon permits/licenses (not sure what they're called) in any semi-auto firearm up to but excluding .50 cal. Also you'll need a weapon locker/safe, police will come by your house to see if it's actually a good idea to give you a firearm and they'll also check if you're not a loonie nowadays (after some punk shot up a mall (with a S&W 15-22) and killed 7 people). After all of that they'll allow you a weapon and will make you pay more in taxes just because your hobby is apparently dangerous or creepy or something.

If you get a handgun, don't get a .22 handgun first, because if you're not careful you'll neglect your recoil control skills for followup shots. A first rifle being a .22 is a different story, that should be just fine.

I believe you should start with a rifle first. Maybe a .22 , .223 or 17HMR if can find one. somthing low cal that you can work up on. I would suggest a Ruger 10/22, just because it's both a .22 and it's hella fun gun. look it up. but go with what ever you can get, those are just suggestions.
