I plan to bed my Remington 700 with JBWeld. My stock has a aluminum bedding block, should I just bed the area around the recoil lug, or skim bed the action as well? What should I use as a release agent?

Any tips from previous experience? Am I a faggot for using JBWeld?

I have got to agree here. I can understand using non-gun equivalents, there's no special magic that goes on at the Birchwood Casey factory that justifies the cost. But jbweld is an adhesive, not really the equivalent of a bedding compound.

It will work but won't be great. Get some marine epoxy and chopped glass fiber filler. Most boating stores will carry these items. Mix the epoxy as directed, and then add filler until you have cookie dough consistency. Bed away using spray pam or something similar as a release agent.

the point of bedding a stock is to make a very tight fit between the stock and the barrel to eliminate as much movement between the two as possible, and improving the overall accuracy of the weapon. Also, because you use a resin to do it, you help reduce the effect of the swelling of the wood due to differing environmental conditions like humidity has on the barrel as well.

WRONG

You bed the stock so that there is a tight fit with the action, not the barrel.
Under no circumstances do you want your stock to contact the barrel if you're trying to build an accurate rifle.
You free float the barrel to gain accuracy.

And there isn't much point in bedding a synthetic stock. Nylon/polymer/rubber stocks will not and expand and contract the way wood does. You stand to gain very little from bedding a synthetic stock to better secure the action.

If the barrel is extremely long, like M91 rifle long, there should be upward pressure near the end to secure the barrel.

Probably done because it's hard to keep a stock that's ~5' long from warping.
