Personally I'd advise (If you can find one at a decent price) one of the trade-in Remington 870 Wingmasters. There good, solid guns and are built to last.

I have a pump action, and it has never let me down. Maybe its something involving the semi-auto version, the amount of trigger pull, how hard it is to pump, etc, so look into it before you buy. (And as a standard rule of thumb, ALWAYS make sure you know everything you can about the model and the specific gun you are planning to purchase.)

i actually just did all your research for you about three weeks ago when i had this same question, i ended up going with the mossberg 500 field/security combo. wood stock standard 500 pump comes with an 18" security bbl and a 28" ported field bbl with three removable chokes and a pistol grip in the box. i paid $340 after taxes when i had my gun shop order it. the only difference ive found between the 500 and 590 is the plastic trigger guard and plastic safety are both metal on the military models, however ive heard from an airforce guy that there are several civy models in the field now.
