so, what are /k/s thoughts on the FN Five-seveN?
Im looking to save up for a good, light, low recoil personal carry handgun for when i turn 21 next year. I know it has a bad rep as a "cop killer", but putting that aside, is it a good gun?
No, i will not get a .22 I feel as if ill snap the fucking thing in half.

It's an overpriced .22 magnum in a flimsy, fragile frame. It has no stoppin powah, and there's no reason to CC something like that unless you plan on fighting 20 heavily armored Spetsnaz operatives. Get something in .40 or .45, or maybe .357SIG.

Its fine. Shoots really pointy really fast bullets and holds alot of them. Dont expect to shoot someone with it and cause their organs to pulp or anything cool like that. But it's a perfectly reasonable pistol with somewhat expensive ammuntion.

For plinking the only real problem is the price. Expensive gun with expensive bullets. No huge improvement over cheaper guns except bragging rights at the range.

If you want it for self defense I'd advise against it. The point of the gun was to fire AP bullets, but you can't buy those so it offers zero advantage while firing a truly *tiny* round. Almost half the size of the 9mm and less than half the size of the .45

What you want is a PMR-30. Pic related.

.22 mag has near identical performance to the 5.7mm against unarmored targets. The PMR-30 is cheaper, and it holds 30 rounds. Also, .22 mag is much cheaper that 5.7mm.

Also, Five-seveN is for fags.

You require central nervous system shots either way, .22 magnum or 5.7. No real difference other than ammunition price.

Actually, there are many reports of factory-defective PMR-30 pistols from Kel Tec because they rushed them out the door and can't produce the volume required.

Pretty sad, given George Kellgren was the man who designed the Grendel P-30, and this is basically the next generation of it.

Why so many problems, George? Why so many problems? He's got fucking job experience on this exact fucking model, why so many problems?

Why did it work before? Same designer, basically the same manufacturing techniques. Grendel P30 had a reputation for working and working well with 50 grain .22 magnum ammunition.

It's easily comparable to a 9mm. That's plenty. Shot placement is everything, and the Five-seven is pretty damn accurate.

The 5.7 is only comparable to the 9mm out of a SMG barrel, not a pistol barrel. Out of a pistol barrel, it comes in at about 150 foot-pounds of energy less.

There's more than seventy weapons in the game, they're not all going to be awesome in every situation just like in real life no single weapon is good all the time. I know metal gear isnt anywhere near realistic but that's something they really nailed with the fourth. "Oh I'm fighting guys with P90s, why dont I switch to the P90 as well so I dont have to worry about depleting ammunition for another weapon. I'll equip a 5-7 as well for the same reason." Sure it's not as awesome as the Thor .45-70 but on the Frog assaults it's great to switch to if you dont have a second to reload the P90.

Which is why people use it in the real world, to play second fiddle to the P90 and smooth logistics since they both use the same caliber.

Five seven owners know this... which is why they either reload (helps mitigate the cost too) and/or buy their defensive ammo from people like elite ammunition.

The article also fails to take into account the different wounding characteristics of high velocity, lightweight rounds which will reliably tumble or fragment.

Finally, 5.7 kicks considerably less than 9mm. 20 rounds of immensely controllable fire that fits in a grip form factor that's as narrow as a 1911 but far lighter. There are legitimate reasons to like it (even as a carry piece), and that's why there's a market for what many consider an overpriced novelty.
