As long as it didn't go all chemical or nuclear, we'd pound the fuck outta them. 90% of our engagements would be from miles away, using modern technology against 1960's Eastern Bloc slavshit. It would be hard, it would be a slugfest, and there's a fuckton of them, but we have the technology, the resources, the **allies**, and the motherfucking Navy.

A full-blown invasion would suck fucking ass, and would only be 60-40 in our favor in the long run, but we've been living on the peninsula for 50 fucking years. We know the place. We know the people.

Imagine it. Another war against an opponent hiding from you in places you can't strike. Instead of giving you the stand up conventional war you can fight instead decides to just wage a guerrilla war that you can never ever win knowing that eventually you will leave and everything you accomplished will be torn down and replaced, nobody will miss the USA's intervention and nothing will change.

Sorta like how Iraq is turning out.

And it's pretty hilarious, you comparing Korea and Vietnam in terrain and mindset. I've looked across the DMZ. Have you? Not a lot of fucking jungle, buddy. It's a wasteland. The people don't stay because they love it there. Many of them think it's a choice between living in fear and squalor in N. Korea and living in capitalist hell and selling their daughters to fat white men in the US.

They have no other option because they don't know another option exists. It's all a facade. Those are easy to break down.

Now these cunts are rolling around your town like they own the place shooting at anyone they think is connected to your homelands military. To top it all off mind you they've decided to replace your country's government with one of their choosing and don't bother asking your opinion on it and just give you a choice between "someone who supports them" and "someone else who supports them"

The simulations for this have been run. A US invasion in Best Korea would run into the billions, and while we would win in a matter of weeks, the North isn't going out without a fight, and those twelve nukes or so that they have would find a few nice targets, most likely in the South.

You did great with Japan because its ruler wanted peace. It all worked out because the politicians were too far away to meddle giving the guy on scene (who shockingly enough wasn't an incompetent fool) the ability to do what he wanted despite the wishes of his superiors.

South Korea is the result of constant US attention. You never built it up with any intent of it being independent. It's a puppet in every way. The only reason the USA would ever want Korea united is so they'd have a good place to attack China from.

NK is so fucked up, air-dropping MREs would instantly cause anti-government notions. People won't support a regime that keeps them starving and kills their family members now and then. Also as to your other question... the Norks try extra hard to make sure defections are impossible at the DMZ. As a soldier, you're never going to be alone if you're stationed there. Supposedly, the officer ratio is through the roof.
