What's the best way to fend off an attacking dog if you don't have a gun on you? Military dog or otherwise, it doesn't matter.

well, the standard for attack dogs is to offer your weak arm, then when they grab it bludgeon them to death with your strong arm+whatever's at hand (carry a knife). would recommend having something wrapped around your arm for that, though.

Take a stick that's heavier at one end and hold it by the lighter end. When a dog yiffs at you, you swing that stick upward, up into that dog's jaw. Doggy eyes can't see under their head, so a stick going up like that will knock 'em away fast and hard.

I was out trick or treating when I was 12 or so and this german shepherd came at me from a yard. It was pretty massive, and I was a small kid, so it grabbed me by the leg and had me on the ground instantly. I booted it in the snout and it jumped at my face and bit my chin, and as I was grabbing it by the head trying to pull it off me I got super angry like the Hulk or something and bit it back, right on its fucking eye. It ran off.

I had 80 stitches. But I think I won. Never saw that dog again. The cops were pretty angry, maybe the took it off and shot it.

its really your best bet. I cant tell you how many times I've gotten chased/attacked by pitbulls (these fucking spicks just let them run around the city), present them your non-dominant arm, and what I've found works best is slamming the palm of your hand into its snout whale gouging with your fingers into its eyes/face.

1) you're not sacrificing an arm. Sure it will hurt like a bitch but it's nothing permanent
2) you can always try to kick (or swing a stick/bat if within reach) it when it jumps but if you miss it's going to jump on you and go for the throat/face, and that is not pretty...

worst part about animal bites, especially dog bites, is they're like punctures in your skin. It'd be better if they sliced through your skin cleanly instead of fucking hole-punching through it...and most dogs will pull downward when they bite, fucking your up even more.

When I worked for the post office, pepper spray -- a big can of it. I remember some idiot let their dog out, it ran down the street after me. It was little as sh*t but those are the worst they have the napolean complex. I aimed my pepper spray as it was barking viciously at me. Then I slowly backed away and didn't have to use it. Luckily, I had it on me that day, usually I'd forget.

There was this time when I was around six where a hugeass chow was going around attacking people, and had ripped off an MP's arm. It eventually attacked my one night and mauled me pretty good. This apparently pissed off my mother, a veterinarian and lover of all animals, to the point where she tracked down the dog and went Thor on its ass.

Other thing I was told in training...rabies. I would not offer it my arm. They would have to kill the dog in order to make sure it didn't have rabies. Plus, huge needles in you as treatment. Not sure if it was just a scare tactic.
