I want to buy a handgun and get my concealed-carry licence but I am unsure of what gun to buy. Ideally I would like it to be a .38 or 9mm but no larger. All I want is information that can help me make a decision.

Yes I am a newcomer to handguns and pistols in general.

hijacking for general firearm noob thread. Seeing as 90% of /k/ probably doesn't own a gun e_e.

How would I go about learning and training with firearms from pretty much nil practical knowledge or culture? /k/ pretty obviously is insanely retarded most of the time, so browsing /k/ doesn't count for very much at all.

Also, pay for training. Ask at your local shop and range.

CCW licenses frequently require and always suggest taking a safety course first.
I suggest you check your sheriff/police department for information on this.
Also, the same ranges that provide rental guns will often hold safety and general marksmanship classes.

Go to a gun range or a gun store, or ideally both.

Tell them you're new to guns. Say it first off. Ask about local firearm safety/training courses. Take one. This may be legally required for a CCL anyway, in some states.

Ask this store about all relevant local laws about gun ownership and handgun carry. If the employees don't know these laws, gtfo and go to a new store, you do not want to shop at that place.

Rent several guns in several calibers. Find something that you find comfortable and pleasant to shoot.

Once you do own a gun, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.

Yeah, try everything out. The glock19 (or 26 if you have concealment issues) is what I'd recommend just for an optimal carry pistol, but it may not be for you.

Throw it in a Dale Fricke holster (preferrably an ArchAngel if you can afford it) and you are gold as long as you can shoot.

I prefer a SIG P229 myself. It's on the expensive side for newbies though, but I say, don't skimp on something as important as a gun.

Also, Glocks have the ergonomics of a brick.

The Kahr CW9 is a great CC gun. It only holds 7 in the mag so it's real slim. pic related. good luck.

I can personally attest to the CW-9's awesome. Almost bought one, but it was used and two-tone like in your pic. Bought the matte black P-9, NIB, instead. STILL a fucking slim and sexy CCW.

if it doesn't fit your hand nice and is comfy you wont shoot it well and also as much as people try to say the opposite the look of a gun and what you want means alot

they are investments as much as they are tools and make sure you buy what you want

Kahr has pretty questionable reliability and customer service. It's one of those things where you get some people who got lucky and got a working product, then they become kool-aid drinkers and defend Kahr to the death...meanwhile other people get a product that is about as reliable as a Raven Arms piece of shit.

Just be warned if you get a bad Kahr, their customer service is said to be god-awful.

The thing with Kahr is they are still quite a tiny company in the grand scheme of things and they're prone to producing lemons a lot more than big companies like Glock, Sig, HK, FN, etc.

I think MOST Kahrs will be good to go after a 300 round break-in (which is recommended by the company), but I've heard a lot of horror stories about bad extractors, broken firing pins, triggers completely failing, etc. Then they send it back to Kahr and it takes 2 months to get it back and it still malfunctions horribly.

I REALLY had my heart set on a CW9 until I started reading these stories and there are just too many of these horror stories out there to just be Internet rumor.
