i have a question, and maybe you´re able to answer it.

lets say you have a squad of infantrymen, how do they find out after the basic training which weapon everybody gets issued? i mean, for example, who gets the m4, who the SAW etc. do they base it on the results on the shooting range?

for more detail, how was this done in ww2 american and german army?

he was machinegunner in 1943 eastern front and he found a russian scoped nagant and was allowed to use it. after making some kills with it he was sent to a sniper course and after that he got a scoped german rifle

as one leutnant said, "we will ask what position you'd prefer, but if we'd let everyone do what they want we'd end up with 40 snipers, 40 scribes and 40 teka drivers. It'd certaintly be intresting to see force of 40 mobile snipers with scribes writing down their shots but the practical use might be dat bit limited"

so yeah, you can request position but certain requirements will need to be met.

It depends on how the fireteams are organized in a specific army.

In the U.S. Army, for example, each fireteam is comprised of:
a team leader, usually a buck sergeant, but sometimes a corporal, who is given an M4 (the carbine/sidearm has always been the officer's or NCO's weapon, with the historical purpose of putting down troops fleeing in the face of the enemy);
a rifleman, who's given M16 (likely an M4 if deployed in an urban area);
a grenadier, who's given the same as the rifleman with the addition of an underbarrel grenade launcher;
and a machinegunner who's given the SAW.
The machinegunner is almost always the largest of the team.

Now, each infantry squad has two or three fireteams, and is lead by a staff sergeant. Quite often, one or two designated marksmen will be attached at squad level, and in accordance with your question, these individuals were picked for their role because of their proficiency at the range. The other troops were organized according to other traits, and always according to the set fireteam structure. Comparative advantage, if you will.

Couldn't tell you about how equipment was distributed in WWII. I suspect that the BAR was attached at squad level rather than team level, but I'm not sure.

As for "when i grow up i wanna be a sniper" or what have you, its down to your aptitude during testing and your firing range results. The sniper program in the US and most other countries has very high requirements, you have to both be very very good at the written work, as well as score brilliantly at the firing range.

I have a friend who wanted to be a sniper, missed the sniper requirements by 3% or something. Tried to appeal but was told that there was simply no room left in the training to allow for that much leeway.

As far as I've read in "With the old breed" the WW2 marines could pick a favorite weapon system on which they got trained. There were always positions which weren't as favored as others, i.e. flame throwers and BAR riflemen mostly got the worst when shit went down so I'm not sure how much freedom one really had.

Today, at least in the german army, it seems to be a combination of talent, the decision of your superiors and your MOS of course, i.e. tank crews will never get the MG4 issued while your normal Panzergrenadier grunt won't get his hands on the MP7.
