ruger or hi standard is a great way to go, but I'd also look into getting him a good bb rifle. The gamo nitros are pretty nice, and I plan on getting one for my nephew soon.

Could always get him a Kel-tec in .32. Or something in .25.

Smaller better fit for his hands, could double as a small carry for yourself/wife, along with smaller caliber for reduced recoil to still give him training.

Vice versa you could get him a full sized .22 or pick up say a Sig Sauer Masquito. Or even go as far to get a p226/p229 with x-change .22 conversion. So you can shoot full sized and can do quick swap for him to shoot.

Try different ammo.

A lot of .22 handguns have a bad habit of only liking one specific type of ammo.

because he needs to learn how destructive firearms are. I don't want him thinking every gun is like a bb gun. Better for him to over estimate their power than underestimate them.

I have tried everything. CCI mini-mags seem to work the best, but still give me problems.

It really is a great gun for him to learn on. His grandfather left him a Colt Gold Cup. When he turns 21, he will be able to rock that gun like nobody's business.

Teaching a progressive respect and understanding of firearms is the best way to raise a child in a household with firearms/firearm lifestyle.

(IMOHO) You start small with pellet gun/bb gun or archery depending on age. From there move up to .22 rifles. Next .22 pistols. Then move up to normal calibers.

Teaching a child to grow up respecting a firearm will lead them to normally be one of the safest, most comfortable person around firearms along with being knowledgeable enough with maintenance and care of said firearms.

My first gun was a single-shot, bolt action.22 Remington Targetmaster. Got it when I was 8. Still have it.

Agreed, giving a kid who's never used one before a gun is a bad idea, especially if the kid ain't too bright. You need to instill into him/her the fact that firearms kill and make them understand that.

my father bought me a used Marlin .22 when I was 6. I don't remember what model. What I do remember is that I spent hours in the backyard plinking old soup cans. Regardless of what anyone says, .22LR is a great starter caliber for kids. It's cheap and has low recoil, making it great for encouraging practice.
