How to make an AK better:
>Improve/relocate safetySeriously, the AK safety is one of the shittiest safeties ever. Even the new safeties around for them that let you use your index finger are substantially slower to use than an AR or similar style safety.
You also get rid of that design flaw that causes a big hole in the receiver causing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqRwx4wtmms>Improve sightsThe iron sights on AKs are carry overs from older rifles, mostly bolt rifles when the irons were further forward because of the action. They're poorly thought out, and notch and post iron sights are inaccurate and just plain suck.
>Magazine well/straight in magsRock and lock magazines are sooo 1960s. Really, they work, but a magazine/straight in system is a lot faster and simpler to use. The "trade off" in robustness is minimal and worth it.
How to make an AR better:
>Improve magazinesOriginal USGI mags were horribly cheap aluminum mags. Luckily, with the addition of PMags, this has more or less been solved.
Still, part of the AK's "legendary" reliability comes from it's magazines, not the piston system itself. Bad mags will make any gun choke, no matter how great it is.
