Alright /k/, in the next month or so, i will be going to a few gun shows, and i have a C96 in mind, i need to know a couple things.

-C96 vs Red 9 (gun price and ammo prices)
-what you think about the gun (only if you have fired it)
-what things to look for in the gun that raise/lower the price or rarity (something like the hex receiver of the mosin)
-Prices, prices, prices

also: some c96's could be old enough to be antique, thus easier to obtain, legally wise

Red 9 for ammo price. Come on, 9x19 Parabellum is one of the most popular handgun rounds today, 7.63x25 is barely even produced anymore.

Both are going to be fucking expensive.

Other than that I have nothing constructive to offer.

You can use 7.62x25 Tokarev in a C96. There is more surplus than anybody knows what to do with at substantially cheaper prices than 9mm.

Problem is, I think its fair to say that all surplus Tokarev rounds are loaded too hot for the weapon. The quality of some of the metal in the weapon is questionable after all these years, especially with Mauser-marked Chinese copies of the C96.

That being said, 9mm is probably your best bet. Watch carefully for Chinese copies...

Also, they'll cost you thousands for a good condition model. And a Red 9 is a C96, just rechambered from 7.62x23mm to 9x19mm.

Tok ammunition is loaded too hot for the C96, it will break catastrophically.

I'd be worried about shooting 7.62 Tokarev in any C96, even if it's an original German model. 7.62x25 is essentially 7.63x25 +P+, so there's a good chance that the locking block or bolt stop will peen explosively (tl;dr Glocknade) if you shoot it through a C96. The C96 isn't the strongest design, locking-wise, so this is more likely than you think.

That said, there's also a number of Spanish copies floating around too. Also, look out for odd welded marks on the side of the frame; a good number of those are select-fire M712 Schnellfeuerpistoles shoddily converted to semi-auto in an attempt to pass them off to unknowing buyers... Which means they're still MASHEEN GUNZ in the eyes of LOL BATFE; likewise, due to their rather unlawful origins, none are registered as such, and are good for 10 years in the federal pokey if you buy one.

You'd likely be best served by just buying a 7.63mm model. You'll at least know the gun is original in that respect since relatively few 9mm models left the Mauser factory. The C.96 is more of a range toy than a gun you'll put a few hundred rounds through at a time. They are robust and reliable but many of the small parts are serial numbered and replacements are few and far between. 7.63 Mauser ammunition can be had for around $18 per 50 for PPU. I don't see any good prices on Fiocchi at the moment but I purchased a few hundred rounds at MGS for $16 per 50 a few years back.

A proper 'Red 9' will usually run from $1500-2000. There are a very large number of fakes priced all over the spectrum, however. A 'fake' is typically a standard C.96 or M.30 which was shot out to the point the bore needed to be relined. These are typically bored out and relined for 9mm and sometimes fitted with 'Red 9' grip panels.

Depending on your level of interest I can detail some points to look for when inspecting a 9mm C.96. Here's a photo of my Wartime Commercial model.
