RedSkull, paging RedSkull... are you in the building? Here is the pic you asked for. All of these shells were designed for cylinder bore 12 gauge, all are 2 3/4" shells. Far right is a #4 medium field load, 18 grains Red Dot with a pisk piston-skeet wad for comparison. The far left is a 1 ounce double-hollow base "drive key" Lee-style slug. The standard loading procedure is to simply dump it into a skeet wad (I use Z21 Trap Commander) over a skeet load of powder, in fact the same powder charge as the #4 shell. It's really nice not having to change powder bushings to do slug, skeet, or small game loads. I basically leave that bushing in all the time. You can also load the slug "backwards" for a hollowpoint! These things rock. Now let's get to the middle two. This is the good part. Second from the left is a less than lethal shell loaded with biodegradable airsoft pellets. The pellets are buffered with gold glitter. Trust me guys, you don't want to stand in the billowing cloud of gold glitter. Wad is an x12x gas seal pusher wad, powder charge varies depending on how I feel. 9 grains of red dot gets the seal out of the barrel reliably, I don't load it above 12 grains. Due to the light weight of payload, this load burns dirty, very dirty. This is why I add the gold glitter, to up the payload weight. 4 teaspoons of gold glitter fit between the spaces of the pellets. Second from the right is a marble load. Depending on your exact marble, you might have to swap wads. Marble in pic fits nicely into a Z21 Trap Commander wad. The marble weighs almost exactly half an ounce. This plus enough glitter to fill the wad puts it at just a gnat's ass under 5/8ths ounce. This load is perfectly safe, just don't get shot with it. You might die.

If you want the marble to turn to dust on impact with a solid object, you "temper" the marble. Basically heat it up until the glass almost goes fluid, then drop it into cold water. If the marble doesn't break, then it's now tempered glass and will turn to freaking dust if you hit a steel plate.
US Air Force had a program in WW2 to train pilots and AA gunners by letting the pilots fly and get shot with machineguns loaded with tempered glass beads. Some called them "Prince Albert" rounds, but for the life of me I don't know why.

I read of a load that chronographed at 2000 feet per second and didn't exceed pressure limits, but load data was not provided due to "extremely excessive recoil."

ok, here's a concept, take a 12 gauge shell, put a 20 gauge handloaded shell facing backwards, the entire shell filled with gunpowder with a marble epoxied to the primer. Then, when you shoot someone, when the shell hits the target, the marble depresses the primer and the shell goes boom. Testing might need to be done to make sure the initial acceleration does not prematurely triggers the shell. I think we can get nutnfancy to do it.

When you do centerfire, you buy the press and dies and you're done. Oh wait, you didn't buy a grain scale. Oh shit, brass is dirty, you need a vibration cleaner. Crap, now you need some resizing lube a micrometer a bullet puller and on and on and on.
To get into shotshell reloading the cheap and easy way:
1. Buy a reloading manual
2. Buy a press (a cheap one like the Lee Load All 2 I got on sale for $40 with shipping is fine for hunters, but not serious skeet shooters)
3. Buy a grain scale if you don't have one already
Next you CAREFULLY pick your reloading components and since you're new to it, you'll fuck up and buy a bag of wads that you can't find a recipe for and so on.
...but that's it.
12 gauge loading is CAKE. Get a few bags of preprimed hulls (mixing up scavenged hulls is asking for trouble for a beginning reloader), a good skeet wad that takes 1 oz of shot and start loading.
Red Dot is a very versatile powder. About the only thing it doesn't do well is steel shot and magnum buckshot. That's what Blue Dot powder is for.
Oh, and primers. Buy them by the big box, not 100-primer-rack. You can normally substitute primers and it's no problem.

The wads for my handcast Lee 1 oz slugs are Z21 Trap Commander wads. The wads triple duty, small game, skeet, and slugs. I think the pisk piston-skeet wads pattern a little better, to I use those for #4 shot. Red Dot powder can fuel all of these.
For the actual slug itself, get a Lee drive-key slug mold. If your slugs look rippled on the surface, your mold wasn't hot enough when you started your pour.
Magnum buckshot is a problem. If you don't mind your buckshot only going 1300 feet per second, you could try to simply just put buckshot in what's otherwise your skeet load. You'll have to use shot smaller than 00, I think you can get a layer of three single 0 buck in one of those Trap Commander wads. The hot buckshot uses powders like a MASSIVE load of HS-6 powder (you can also load 5.56 with that, I believe.)
Whatever you do, DONT just dump steel BBs in just any old wad. You'll need a thick wad to avoid scratching your barrel. Also, if the level of shot is higher than the wad, IT IS NO GOOD.

Shot bushings are the same thing, but for shot.
>>8782382 What is the grain scale for?It saves your life. You weigh the finished shells. If they're way off, you fucked up. If your supposedly 1 oz slug is more like .65 oz, it's fucking hollow with air bubbles and wont work correctly. You weigh the powder that is thrown by the powder bushing before you crimp your shells so you know it is putting out the right amount.
Also, if you screw up and forget to mark your shells or the bag they're in, you can possibly weigh them to tell them apart.
This is another reason I prefer clear hulls, but the black ones I have are just so sexy.

I have 5 broken-up motorcycle batteries that never had acid in them. THOSE are okay to melt for bullets, supposedly.
However, since these projectiles will be contained in a wad, I wonder if it would really be that much of a problem? I'd try it with the buckshot in a cylinder bore, but not with a slug. Besides 5 pounds of pure lead makes a shitload of slugs and you'd not need any more for a while.

Bar shot: Yeah. Load with a steel shot recipe and use finishing nails of the proper length, or trim them with bolt cutters. It's bar shot, micro bar shot. Out of a real cannon, bar shot rapes entire crowds of people. Out of a 12 gauge, not so much.

I'll explain why they are 2 1/2 inches; it's because they don't have a crimp to fly open. A 2 1/2 inch shell is measured OPEN.
Also, that is the original type of shotgun shell. Those and paper ones. The all-brassers have a reputation for incredible longevity as long as you don't cycle them through a pump.
You have to glue a nitrocard wad over your load. The advantage of this is if you light load, you just glue the wad further down in the shell for perfect packing and clean burning.
Also, those Magtech shells take large pistol primers, not 209 shotshell.
All in all, not a bad thing for the 12 gauge hand loader to have if he were preparing for the apocalypse.

I'm not stomping on the idea, it's just really hard from what I've seen. The guys who get the cable to not pull out end up snapping the cable.
Also, the thicker the cable the harder and harder it is to coil it inside a wad. Skating it down your barrel with no wad is going to score it badly.

It'll take several tries to get it right, but a 3-pack of road flares is $15 and will more than likely outlast your desire to keep making more 12 gauge flares.

Prepare your hull with a steel shot recipe that jives with how many flechettes you're able to fit in your particular wad. Load half of them backwards.
The ones pointing forwards have a very tight pattern, the backwards ones flip around eventually, then mostly stay together in a larger pattern. I would also consider using shot buffering compound.
These things group very tightly over distance, however they don't kill or incapacitate quickly unless one severs an important part of the central nervous system or you get the majority of the blast centered on the head.
>>8782909 Would loading a shell entirely with glass powder fuck someone's day up at close range? how bad?The biggest problem with that is that the "shot size" is so tiny, that wind resistance becomes huge. Your effective lethal range would be measured in inches. You might as well load with onion soup mix, it'd be just as deadly. Brotip: muzzle flash alone can kill, conceivably. Your "irritation range" would be about 15 yards max, and wind blowing it back on you equals you breathing your own glass dust.
You might be better off trying cayenne pepper. They have those here.

"Prince Rupert's Drop" (AKA 'Rupert's Balls' 'Dutch Tears') is an old trick where you drip molten glass into water. It forms a tempered teardrop with a long thin tail. The 'head' is incredible strong, so much that you can whack it with a hammer and it will remain intact, but any damage to he hair-thin tail will cause the whole thing to shatter into a fine dust.
This is because the outside is cooled rapidly on contact with the water, but this cooled layer insulated the inside that cools slower and contracts, resulting in a mass of glass held in extreme tension by a thin skin that is under extreme compression. This tension/compression is what gives the head it's extreme strength, but once the skin compression is broken (by snapping the tail) the internal tensioned mass bursts apart.
A couple of videos:

Why are people not supposed to like it? Steel has less density than lead. So for the same volume in the shell, you have less mass there to carry the energy. Also, it patterns tighter than lead.
Steel shot was required by law for waterfowl hunting to help preserve them; supposedly, they were getting gravel to help digest their food and getting lead shot along with it. It's only purpose is waterfowl hunting; a job it does poorly.
You have to go up two shot sizes to get the job done. This means the pattern has fewer pellets in it. It reduces the range of the shell, and when you get a duck, it tends to tear them up pretty badly.
Non-toxic alternatives exist, such as bismuth shot. It's expensive. There's also "hevi-shot" and "itx shot", which are basically a technology called tungsten-iron matrix. It has GREATER density than lead and outperforms it, as well.
The current crop of non-toxic waterfowl hunting shells is doing quite well. That itx stuff is pretty wild. BPI sells it, and it's available in BUCKSHOT as well!

Last I heard, BATFE was going to let it through with "paradox barrel rifling." This means straight rifling in the last inch or two of the barrel, so no spin.
When you spin a shotcup, it blows a hole in the center of the pattern. A rifled shotgun barrel when used with shotshells will almost always display a huge empty center of the pattern. It's called a "doughnut" pattern. The same thing happens when your powder charge blasts through your wad or if you needed an overshot card and didn't use one.

So if Taurus can argue "Sporting Purpose" on a paradox rifled Raging Judge XXVIII, they can get it on the market as a non-NFA weapon (and I'm pretty sure that this is what the negotiations are focusing on).

Subgauge inserts, I suppose for .410 because 36 gauge is totally unheard of in the US. If the subguage inserts handle .45 lc then the Judge 28 goes to Maximum Trolling status.
I could say "oh yeah, this is a .410." then say "no, it's a 28! what were you thinking?" Then "lol no, forty five" Nice. Dragon's breath rounds aren't available in 28, but they are in .410.

When you decide to strike off on your own, every loading manual says DONT DO IT YOU WILL DIE.
The only problem with that shell is I didn't know if I would face something called a "pressure excursion." It's a catastropic condition when your payload is too light, and can also happen to underpower powder loads. Basically the powder charge doesn't provide a smooth, even pressure curve and can be dangerous.
I am pretty sure the airsoft shell is safe, because there is so much unburned powder residue in the barrel. This indicates that the light payload didn't provide enough resistance to give enough pressure to provide a clean, even burn. I would actually be MORE worried if the load burned cleanly. It doesn't. Therefore, there is very little pressure generated. Therefore, safe.
The marble load is a straight-up 5/8ths ounce light load, because that's what the payload is. They are hard to find, but 5/8th ounce payload recipes exist.

i have hoarded over the years a vast amount of shotgun rounds, 12/20/28 i dont even own the 20 gauge anymore
have you ever thought about or tried those tube adapters that let you fire 28/20 gauge shells from a 12 ga.??

>have you ever thought about or tried those tube adapters that let you fire 28/20 gauge shells from a 12 ga.?? Yeah, Chambermate is an example. I've looked into it. I'd probably get the 28 gauge when the Judge 28 comes out, because I'd get into volume 28 gauge loading at that time and also be able to use 28 in my single barrel 12. (it will last forever.)
>im thinking in a shtf scenario they would be handy as who knows what ammo you might stumble upon in the wastes Something else to consider is that smaller gauges tend to use up less reloading components.

If the problem is that the hull tears where the crimp folds, you can trim that off and make shorter shells. Loading info is available for 2.5", 2.0", and 1.5" however the shells start getting really weak by that time.
>>8789671 I have heard of .50BMG brass being turned into shotgun shells, any details on this.Never heard of this. With the price of .50bmg brass, that would be an expensive box of shells. A box of 25 magtech 2.5" all-brass shells is cheaper than 5 loaded .50bmg fmj rounds. I'm betting if it works, though, that the .50bmg brass would last until the end of time in a single or double barrel. Tube mag shotguns don't particularly like all-brass shells and it's hard on the brass.
>I plan on getting a M1897, however I have heard that they do not feed short shells well, do you have any ideas as to why or how to improve it's feeding them? If it is a manually cycled shotgun, there is usually an operating trick to make it happen. Perhaps you have to cycle the action harder. Perhaps you have to push the gun forwards as you close the action at just the right second. Works on an 870, anyway.

If you want to see a gallon water jug explode like never before, try filling those hollow cavities with wheel bearing grease such that there are no air bubbles. This causes faster opening of the hollow point.

Gentlemen, pre-and-post-op trannies of /k/, no girls on the internet, sorry I'm not talking to you...
The most important thing I have to tell you before this thread is locked for archive are these things:
All loads presented are safe except the glitter airsoft shell. Here's why:
1. Trolled for unburned powder on an untested handload. If there is unburned powder in your barrel on an untested handload YOU MIGHT DIE. If your shotgun barrel is too short, and it was really cold temperature wise outside, then maybe that was it. Wait, is this a TESTED LOAD? SAYS WHO????? ME?
2. If you use Anonymous' load data straight from the internet, YOU WILL DIE. Load data publishers have a legal liability and post retractions and corrections, somehow. OR ELSE THEY DIE as a company.

High humidity and barometric pressure will cause this untested load to BLOW UP IN YOUR MOTHERFUCKING FACE AND YOU ARE MAIMED AND DIE. (maybe)
4. Nobody on this forum knew enough to know how to call me out. This is now full disclosure! At 75 degrees Fahrenheit with between 30 and 75%, some internet reloader got this thing to NOT KILL HIM. Okay. Sounds cool, bro. THINK TWICE!
5. Unburned powder in the barrel on an untested handload should make any handloader worry. Why? Maybe if the outside temperature were hotter, it all burned, blew up your gun and you died.

That's when you're screwing around with load data not knowing what you're doing. You use too light of payload and there's not enough backpressure to light the powder. You add more and more powder. It didn't all burn, so add more, right? WRONG. THIS KILLS THE HANDLOADER.
Liability disclaimer: 9 to 12 grains of red dot, as stated for the airsoft shell, shouldn't have the power to blow the reciever. If it only blows your barrel, it probably won't kill you. I AM NOT LIABLE FOR DAMAGE TO YOUR SHOTGUN FOR LISTENING TO LOAD DATA ON 4CHAN.

You have the freedom to dump the shot charge and weigh it (highly suggested if you have just changed out your powder or shot bushing or have just refilled the powder or shot bin/bottle/hopper/whatever.
You need to begin the crimp. In a nice, cheap single stage press such as the Lee Load All 2, you begin the crimp in one of two stations. One is an 8 crimp press and the other is a 6 crimp station. If you press a shell that's been crimped before into the wrong folder (6 in the 8 or 8 in the 6), you get a fucked-up looking fold! It will also likely bulge the shell, fuck it up, and maybe kill you if you fire a bulged shell.
Never fire a shell that has a bulge sticking out the side. SERIOUSLY.
Better ask me more questions or else flame continues with full disclosure on everything /k/ failed to notice in this thread so far.
>CAN I BE TRUSTED? What if I'm a dumbass and didn't know to tell you that one single thing that got you killed? Barrel plugged with mud or something? Maybe you could get away with that in a factory load, maybe not. Untested handloads kill you under those circumstances.
Just sayin.

>So - Loose fitting slug: how do I keep it from slipping outta there? Four ways: We will start with oldest and go to newest.
Oldest way: It's a paper hull. Once upon a time, you got boxes of primed empty paper hulls with a tiny brass base with a primer in it. The tiny base held the primer to be struck and fire the powder that YOU poured in there. Once upon a time, people kind of just wadded the paper over, maybe rolled it up, squashed it down. These shells are disposable.
The other oldest way: You have an all-brass shotgun shell. You must GLUE an overshot card down inside this all brass tube. If your load is short of the top of the shell, that's okay. Just glue it down further inside the all-brass tube

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewproduct/?productnumber=436640 If your crimp sucks, your load sucks. Drop the small dollars and get slugs that work. A self-cast handload slug is cheap. Compare to over $1 per bang for storebought, then the press pays for itself quick.
What happens if your crimp sucks is that you get a partial powder burn. When this happens, you get a false sense of security about your "maximum load" or "poor performance," one of the two.

>The thing is, these are factory shells - just pryed/sliced open at the top with the shot cup and shot removed. To pull the flaps open without cutting is fine if you can re-crimp as well as factory did. Otherwise, you'll get lower velocity due to improper backpressure from a weak crimp. This is the same as reloading a worn-out hull. A weak crimp cause the PROPER amount of powder to not burn correctly. Most failed handloads are this.
> I can see little tiny itty bitty flecks of powder behind the shotcup. Dunno how bad that is. Again, factory load, not hand load. It's not very many. What? 3, 5, 6 tiny specks around the wad? That's nothing. It's normal.

What I'd do is get the cheap press, fire the cheap shells, then reload once USING THE PROPER CRIMP STATION (8 petal crimp gets the 8, 6 gets the 6 fold, and so forth) with a wad fitting to your slug.
Note that the reloading press has a wad-starter to help you get the wad into the open pleats of the shell. This helps TREMENDOUSLY! You can even ease the handle down and gently bump the wad into the shell. Right tool for the right job, and the press seriously doesn't take up much space. The main advice I can give to you is mount it on a board so the handle swings freely all the way down.

If you leave your powder and shot measures the same, shot shell hulls CANNOT BE LOADED THE SAME. They all seem to have slightly different case capacities. If you try to use a straight wad in a tapered (that is... gets smaller near the part with the primer in it) you are asking for an over-filled shell and a wad that is TOO TIGHT. This will overpressure your shell and turn what was a safe load into a dangerous one. 2. "These loads were developed with an 18" cylinder barrel by internet wise guy." This should have set off red flags and alarm bells. It's quite possible that a 28" removable full choke would have exploded with "some dude's" handload. 3. question inbound from irc:>What can you tell me about shotgun spreads? The spread of the shot has to do mostly with the interaction between the wad, the shot, and the barrel. If the shot is above the level of the wad, then some of it touches the barrel. When this happen, it spins and flies out away from the center of pattern. If your shot load wad totally contains the shot (not all do) then it should pattern tighter. If your shot load contains buffering material, then this helps prevent shot deformation when it goes through the choke. It also helps prevent turbulence in the first critical few inches of travel of the wad and shot column after it leaves the barrel. This is critical because this is the time of major disturbance of the shot column. When gun gasses escape between the wad and barrel, this disturbs the column of shot in the wad. If your load accelerates too fast due to too hot of a powder charge, the shot will literally bounce up from the shotcup and rattle around in the barrel in advance of the shot column. An overshot card helps prevent this. They are very, very cheap. If your load has a powder charge in excess of the weight of the shot charge, this is an age-old problem. Back in the days of black powder, you had equal weight of shot and black powder charge. This ratio applies even to CANNONS. Reducing the black powder charge from this ratio tightens the patterns. If you care, google the x-spreader wad. It is a spacer between tiles like you'd tile your bathroom. You can get a bag for ridiculous cheap. Placing one of these at the bottom of your shotcup spreads patterns quickly. Without buffering and spreader wads, you're looking at about an inch of spread per yard of shot column travel. Cool question, bro. Hope you swing by and read the answer. I posted it just like I said I would. Just like I posted op pic. Just like I said I would.

Upgrade your gauge. 12 pretty much peters out with low velocity at about an ounce and a half. 10 gauge can go 2.5 ounces of slug, no problem... but getting a little slow. 6 gauge can do 4 ounces at 1800 feet per second, but now we're speaking of black powder cannons... then again that's a no-overload condition. Black powder cannons properly made rate at 90,000 psi. Compare and contrast with 18,000 to 20,000 for a common 12 gauge shotgun.

Yes. US Army improvised munitions manual states that you can use rice flour, sawdust, and other such things as a buffering agent.
Buffered shot loads pattern more tightly. Make sure you don't add so much you affect the weight of the shell, don't pack it in there firmly. Pour in your buffer, tap the base of the shell on a table a few times, you're done.
I've used dry uncooked grits, white wheat flour, glitter, cream of wheat, onion soup mix (didn't work well), and a bunch of others.
...and store bought buffering compound. They sell it in jars at hand loading supply places.
DONT use something that can't compress, sand, for example? Don't do that. You'll get excessive chamber pressures just because of improper buffering material.
More questions, please. Don't be afraid to ask a weird off-the-wall question. I fucking love those.
