What's a good .22lr as a first gun? I'm not too interested in 10/22's as I hear you only pay more for the wide range of after market kits. I want to put a scope on it eventually, but that will be the only accessory.

I was thinking about buying a larger caliber rifle (something I could hunt with, feel more like a man, practice for my planned service in the military, etc) but I know how adamant you /k/ommandos are about a .22 being your first rifle so what evs.

TL;DR specific reasons about what .22lr OP should buy?

Because it's better than the 10/22 in every way, costs about $100, and tube mags are easier to load than .22 box mags.

Basically, can OP have a pro's and con's of each .22lr thread? Why one gun is more expensive yet higher quality etc.

I'm sick of guys popping up in a thread, screaming the name of a gun, then leaving. It really doesn't help my decision making.

Just as reliable as a 10/22, only it has a tube fed magazine, which I prefer over a detachable mag for a .22. Accurate as shit out of the box, easy to mount a scope on.

The difference in ease of loading for .22 mags is negligible at best. If you have difficulty loading a .22 box mag you are a faggot of the greatest proportions.

I dunno, I used to hate on 10/22's but mine is ridiculously accurate and quite reliable. It's completely stock aside from a cheap weaver 4x scope.

Maybe because it's an old one or something...

I'd say plop down $150 and get an M69 trainer. It's simple to use, bolt action, cheap, a fucking tack driver, and is a generally cool gun. The only problem I have with it is the complexity of the bolt, but you own't have to worry about that too much. The sight system is pretty fucking cool; it's got moving leafs marked at 25, 50 and 100 yards. Pretty cool if you ask me.

Get almost anything but a Ruger 10/22. You're paying extra for a gun that is of poorer quality compared to Marlins and Savages, heck even old dime-a-dozen 50$ Sears guns are better. I was sort of OK with mine up until it literally shook itself loose during my last range trip. I'm still missing pieces. At this point I just want to junk it as fast as possible and buy a nice used .22 gun that doesn't fall apart in my hands.
The only worse option would be one of those "tactical" .22 rifles. They would be an absolute waste of money if they were good quality, and since they are just cheap cash-ins you can rest assured they'll go to pieces very quickly.

I just have a bad experience with bolt actions. They were the first gun I ever shot and it was with the rifle/pistol team in my school in an indoor hot-as-hell range where they made you wear a sweaty shooting jacket and hold this 40 lbs .22lr remington single shot bolt action.

The thing was so heavy and the bullet so puny that the gun barely jumped when you fired it. On top of that, you had to load each shot individually by hand and look down these shitty iron sights.

I wanna put the hurt on an outdoor target 100 yds down range through a scope and not have to stop to reload.

Price is probably the only reason why I'll go .22, you got me there.

I usually go shooting out on some land a friend owns in the middle of nowhere. Better than a range because you can shoot at whatever targets you want with whatever guns you want however you want. Nothing like drinking a beer and shooting the empty bottle while drinking another bottle of beer.

I don't know what you've heard about aftermarket stuff, it's not necessary. I kept mine like it came out of the box for 12 years before adding a new stock and a scope.

The fact that there are accessories are only a testament to it being the most popular model of .22 in existence. It's not evidence of some sort of deficiency.

I LIKE the magazines. My brother has a marlin 60, and while it's okay, its innards feel cheap and flimsy, it jams, and seems to accumulate way more grit that my 10/22 after a day of plinking.

Also. You can hunt with a .22. Small game, and birds are perfect. In my area, ptarmigan.

but 10/22s are significantly more expensive than similar semis made by marlin or savage. No one has ever really explained why. My savage 64 is certainly well made, and so is my dad's marlin 995. I just dont see why I should pay more for a rifle that, frankly, is less accurate than cheaper rifles.

It seems like the 10/22 is priced as such because of the aftermarket products, which seems slight ridiculous to me. Paying more.... so I can have the opportunity to pay more. I dont get it.

The Ruger 10/22 is popular. When a gun is popular parts for it are mass produced and they are cheaper.

So, mags are cheaper, stocks are cheaper, sights on it are cheaper, whatever the hell you want for it is cheaper.

I don't think they charge more simply because it's popular and I doubt the other .22's are more accurate than it.

The few times that I've shot a 10/22 they've also felt a wee bit small. I've read this same complaint on other forums too. I am also 6'2" though so my arm length is a bit longer than usual

thats my own experience. I couldnt fire 4 rounds without a mag-related (standard ruger 10rd) or the spent casing getting caught in the ejector
but thats just my own experience
it was also very picky about ammo.
it would also fire rounds backwards sometimes.

many "holowpoints" are "subsonic" and don't have the power to cycle the gun.

My brother and I tried running through a box of those, him with his marlin 60, me with my 10/22... I think they were Remington hornets or something like that, and apart from getting a failure to eject every other round or so, they were pitifully underpowered, seeing about 8" of drop over 50 yards.

every mag or so the shell casing would deflect inside the chamber and get lodged backwards along the space between the bolt and the bottom of the reciever.
we also inspected the projectiles afterwards and a few of them we're misshapen from firing. This is just from normal 550 and 555 count hollowpoints.
