No .22 for home defense. Sure, it may kill the guy, but you want something that most definitely will kill the guy, or at least get damn close. Killing someone is NOT something to undersell yourself on, overkill is always better. Even if you blow up your own damn house with the home defense you chose, at least you were the one doing it and the invader didn't kill you, drink all your booze, fuck your dog and wife and then blow up your house.

Carbines are ok for home defense and for plinking depending on caliber, shotgun is commonly seen as ideal for home defense. I'd say a 5.56 rifle would be fine for both, 7.62 works, too.

Just purchased my first firearm.

It's a Llama Comanche 357 Magnum. I bought it for $200 and took it to the range for the first time yesterday and it's as accurate as any revolver I've ever fired (this is the first firearm I OWNED but my dad's a cop and I've been going to the range with him for years).

Just thought I'd share that

I saw a vid on You-Tube of it in action and it seems pretty nice. I can't vouch for all things Kel-Tec since I've never owned one but it's worth a look for home defense without overly penetrative rifle calibers

Shotguns fuck attackers up. Pistols and rifles both shoot rounds quickly at your attacker, but pistols are smaller, and the range advantage of rifles is negated by the close quarters environment.
