Does anyone here reload? I want to start, and im fully ready to go somewhere and blow a chunk of cash on a setup. Curious as to some recommended presses and maybe additional items.

Right now i cant decide between the lee classic turret, or the hornady lock n load. Im leaning tword the turret since im new, and i want to focus on loading one at a time right now. However, money isnt much of an issue, and i dont want to buy something that ill stop using in 3 months.

Suggestions for equipment?

I own the Lee turret press, and it works fine. Protip: Get a digital powder measure. Powder measures that work by weights -- like little old postal scales -- are *SUCH* righteous pains in the fucking ass. Spring for the $30. It will spare you much gnashing of teeth.

Can't reload rimfire because you can't prime it.

Cost savings would be negligible anyway.

You can save about .80 cents a round on 308 compared to match ammo.

Depends on the individual brass, the gun you fired it through, the powder load that was in it, etc. Sometimes you can't even reload it once, sometimes you can get as many as five or six shots out of one piece of brass, maybe more.

If you work with max or higher than book loads (or want to really push the accuracy limits of your rifle) don't screw around with digital scales that cost less than 200 bucks. The cheap ones can read the same value for two powder charges almost .25 grains apart, because they aren't actually .1 grain scales but rather .01 gram scales, and thats a bigger unit of measure than .1 grains.

And you can also fuck the accuracy of the scale in about 40 other ways, so you might as well not even bother.

I'll admit that the Lee safety scale sucks dick, but an RCBS/Ohaus 505 will blow your mind, it's so fast and easy to use, and it'll actually let you measure accurately and precisely.

can usually get brass for free from ranges. if you're reloading .45, in my experience, you have to watch to make sure the primer can be popped out, or else you'll snap the pin off that removes the primer.

Or you could get good dies, Ones with pins strong enough to decap crimped primer military brass, but set to get pushed out of the way if you are stupid and put a piece of beridan primed brass in your decapper.

not the issue; i came across some brass that has two vents for the primer charge to ignite the powder that are not in the center, but smaller than regular holes and spaced about halfway from center to outside of shell on opposite sides. didn't know those existed, just thought it was a difficult one, snapped my pin. looked it up but i don't remember what it is anymore, i just remember to watch for those now.

Most reloading mechanisms are generally the same. Carbide dies mean you dont have to lubricate, which really speeds up the process.

I shoot a lot of 8mm, and it really saves a lot of money. I think it costs about $0.30~$0.40 per shot, as opposed to..... well, new rem rounds are about $1.50/round PP is about $.075/round and milsurp varys widely, depending on whos selling it and what you can haggle and how long theyve had it.

So Id say its worth it.

guy I know owns a range, gets his lead for free, casts his own bullets, reloads whatever brass is discarded. (he reloads 9x19mm, .40s&w, .45acp). He's looking at something like $0.045 a round, for the primer and powder. Makes decent practice ammo.

Thanks for the advice, if it makes a difference ill mainly be loading 25-06, .308, .45acp, and .38 special, starting in reverse order.

Like i stated, im not sure if i want to start straight up on a progressive (dillon 550). The main reason i want to begin reloading is because .308 match ammo is fuckexpensive. From what ive read progressives and match rounds arnt the best mix.

I will buy that exact specific book, and a few others.

Good places to purchase?

I started out reloading 8mm mauser in the early 80's. I had a Lyman 310 tool, a 200 grain H&G bullet mold and lived near a Goodyear tire shop. My grandfather made me a custom 8mm brass trimmer and I saved up and got a lubrisizor and started gas checking those babies after clogging the shit out of my barrel.

I would go down to the river front and blast away at a buoy some 200 yards out with my 98K.

Life was good.
