TODAY was a great day for SCIENCE. There have been many questions swirling lately about the two true superpowers in this world: Denim, and the .22lr. Some say that denim shorts will vaporize or ricochet a .22lr bullet and hardly dent -- others say that a .22lr bullet will tear through denim, the person wearing it, and leave orbit on a trajectory to ruin some alien's day. Both cannot be true. So the tests begin. With a trip to JoAnn's for two yards of denim. Next, a device to hold and compress the layers of denim is constructed.

Kinetic energy... is mass times velocity. Something weighing 1 kilogram moving 100M/s has the same energy as something weighing 100 kilograms moving 1M/s.
The damage they do depends entirely upon what they hit. that's subjective. A car hits me at walking speed, and I maybe say "oof" and fall on my ass and fake an injury so I can sue, a bullet with the same energy will splatter my guts and tear my spine out through my back like the predator.
Difference is surface area, and the duration of the impact. same principle people can break boards with karate chops. The energy is transferred to the board in a small fraction of a second, rather than distributed out over a large fraction of a second a fatty, jiggly ham-handed slap would do.

I am more than confident in a heavy 22lr's ability to kill a man at 100 yards. it will absolutely penetrate skull. the best thing to do if someone is shooting at you from outside with a 22 would be to open the door, get on the floor, everybody walk the dinosaur.

well, technically you were correct. You said, "A thick enough denim jacket..." a fifty something layered denim jacket would make you impervious to the 22lr lol. and glad to see you're being such a good sport about it.

I applaud you, sir.
At risk of starting another shitstorm, thick winter clothing and coats have been known for reducing the damage of bullets. I remember reading a police report of a perp wearing a thick leather coat who was shot 60 times with 9mm black talons and kept fighting until a few .223s went right through him and hit something vital. The black talons hit his clothing and began expanding before they reached his body and never penetrated enough to land a lethal blow. Of course, that's HP ammunition, not ball, and the difference is huge when it comes to clothing. Ball is a much better penetrator.
Let me see if I can find that case.
