For the record, I'm an /a/non with a black belt in karate, decent training in weapons such as the sai, nunchaku, bo staff, kama, tonfa and of course the glorious pride of nippon, the legendary katana. One is a peasant about the same age, with a few weeks of training and a half-decent rifle made pretty much any time since the Civil War. The chances of the samurai winning are exactly equal to the chances of the peasant's rifle jamming. Less, even, if the peasant brought a pistol as a backup weapon. This is why swords are virtually never used in combat in the modern era-the rifle has made them totally non-viable as a military weapon.

>Hand Sanitizer >Something to use for cauterization >Gauss, lots.of it >Splints, compression stockings, gloves, Ect >Several minor operation tools (Scalpel, tweezers, Ect) >Pill bottles of Advil, Motrin If I was at home, I would take a picture. I think Ill do that tomarrow.
Oh, PROTIP: In SHTF, nothing is to be overlooked. If you hurt your knee, use the compression stocking and try to relax, go slower then you normally would. It could be a pulled mussel or soft tissue damage, or it could be something worse like aa sprain or dislocation. Of corse some hurt more then others, but still. You don't want to cause more damage.
And putting a small dab of alcohol on a cut wont hurt ya.

Pretty much any of those books should give you the basics. I figure if you know how to deal with- Trama, shock, dehydration, basic illness, and maybe CPR (if you can get trained for real.) that's all you'd need for survival.
Anything past that level, ie- IVs, stitching, etc. is nice to know but not necessary in many cases. Plus the tools are more specialized.
I would recommend that people take basic EMS classes though, they really do teach you good stuff.

I would want a "the colony" type situation when SHTF. Only with guns and other various wepons for security. A group with a wide veriety of minds stands the best chance for living on. Of course guns are going to save your ass, but so are people who can build things, treat wounds and other health conditions, handy men who know their way around electrical/mechanical/carpentry/welding and so on. I am not saying those who feel better on their own innawoods won't make it, but the old rule of strength in numbers applies when society colapses. That's just my 2 cents though take it for what its worth.
