in the last 4 months i've read 44 books

ereaders are sweet you can discuss them here too. i've got the sony pocket. touchscreen, handy paperback like size. downloaded 750 sci-fi classics, takes up less then 2gigs. it's like a library in my pocket.

214 exactly all year last year. Most of them classical literature (greek/roman).

I read everything the greeks and romans ever wrote, important collections of fragments included as of march this year.
This year I'm up to only around 40 so far.

Most of them Spanish, which is my mother language. Some I could not get in spanish, so I had to get them in english.

I know both latin and greek but reading a whole book in their original language is nearly impossible. I only read the Aeneid in latin (with heavy use of a dictionary) and the Odissey in greek (even heavier use of dictionary).
My starting goal was to read them all in their languages, but after trying those too and taking so fucking long to make sense of them, decided against it.

Maybe 10 or 15? Longer ones, but ya, not counting short stories and articles from papers/magazines/etc.

On the other hand, I've easily written 2-300 pages of text in essays alone.

i could never write so many essays. i have poor discipline and attention span. are all the essays on the same subject? are they good essays? maybe you should compile them in a book. self publish or put em on the net for free. whatever.

Mostly school stuff. My honors classes (I usually take 2 a semester) are essentially essay-only, and even a short essay is 4-6 pages. Research ones run close to 10-15. Average around 20 pages a class by 5 classes by 2 semesters=200. I do write personal ones occasionally though.

And yes, they are good...my writing is the one skill I pride myself on.

I think the ancient man was just that, a man. As I read on and on on their customs, pecularities, desires and everything, the more I felt them to be more familiar than I initially thought. There are a lot of things that echoe to this very day, specially in mediterranean cultures. What I find fascinating is you can see a lot of ceremonies, customs and rites of the romans still living on through the catholic church, with some changes of course, but it's there. Like, for example, even today the pope Benedict beatified his predecessor John Paul II, much to the custom of new roman emperors making divinities of their predecessors in order to seem pious and appease the people.
I think the thing most peculiar to the mediterranean man of the time is their worship to the concept of family and extending that to all aspects of their lives, public and private.

I've read 53 books this year. Most are fairly short though in the 350 page range and a bunch of Harelquins. I read a few good ones a while back and stumble across a good one every once in a while.

To be fair, OP said "book." This can mean short story collection, novella, whatever. I'd say it's pretty easy to "read" a 100 page novella in a day.
