Joyce General.

Reading my first Joyce book 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man,' and I'm just finished the first chapter.

Already, this has got me interested in Irish Literature, which I embarrassingly neglected (being an Irishman myself). This book is just simply wonderful so far.

I will be sure to attempt Ulysses in the summer and may buy Finnegan's Wake to dip in and out of it from time to time, aiming to decipher a fragment of chaos.

Opinions on Joyce?

also, i liked dubliners more, but Portrait was too deep for me.

I'm actually from Ireland, born and bred. I do have a Lebanese father though, but I always classify myself Irish due to always living here, being born here and speaking a good bit of Irish.
Truth be told, I've never been to America, but I'd love to go.

Sure do,im a bit closer to the end.I have the oxford version of the book which includes a heck a lot of explanatory notes.The amount of allusions far :alludes: me,i have to do just as much reading on historical information included in the book as i do the book itself.It's also great to become familar with many catholic terms and traditions especially as i was born a catholic(non-practicing).I just finished the third chapter early this morning.

It's true what Joyce said, you will dedicate your life to reading his works. I started with A Portrait of The Artist as a Young Man a year ago, and decided to read Ulysses and Finnegans Wake afterwards. I'm still only in chapter 2 of Finnegans Wake. I've decided to read it a few times after the first time to understand more, and I'll probably read it even more times in my life.

The irony about Joyce's life is that his last words were "does nobody understand?"
