This show owns so hard it deserves a thread of its own.

The main character is surprisingly not annoying, the journalist dude has awesome facial hair, it somehow mixes Battletech, the low-tech Gundam shows and an aesthetic from Legend of Galactic Heroes and keeps it awesome, and the music is some of the best ever.

The OP has the same awesome swing as the classic MAKUROSS song.

I agree with you. Ryousuke Takahashi made some great mecha with Dougram, Layzner, VOTOMS, and Galient in the 80's before emo bishounen and piss-poor conflict structures became the norm rather than the exception in the 00's. Dougram was a rebel series that Geass SHOULD have aspired to have become like, but this isn't the 80's anymore. /M/en like Chirico Curie, Cobra, Eiji Asuka, etc. aren't appreciated anymore because J-fans have lost their balls.

Someone else got MELTED by a missile going off.

Old shows were awesomely violent.

What makes this even better, though, is that the mechs are a good compromise between stompy and zippy - the Combat Armours and the Dougram handle like Battletech mechs, using thrusters for short hops and evasive action, and then firing on the move.

And they're used in combined arms, too.

Yep. 70's and 80's mecha had some pretty screwed-up violence. Like Ideon's bloodbath (kid lost his head to a rocket!), or Dairugger's battles.

I seem to remember a scene in DYRL where a dude gets pulped by wreckage when the SDF-1 is attacked, and there's no shortage of violence (even though it's pretty tame compared to stuff like this) in LOGH. Fuck, just the idea of using a hand grenade fuel-air bomb to kill a few grunts is pretty brutal.

Closest thing to that sort of violence I can think of in a modern series is that Valk pilot getting turned to jam by the Vajra in episode 1 of Macross Frontier.

Also, someone said they had PROMOTIONS of Canary, or something. DO WANT.

From what I've seen around here, the show isn't fully subbed yet, right? About what % of the show is complete? I'm getting a strong DO WANT vibe from this show, but I may wait for a full set of subs first.

I love 80's mecha myself. I plan to watch Vifam soon too which I'm hearing good things about. Honestly I'm a Tomino fan, but there really is something about Takahashi's older stuff that truly flows like a novel, LOGH-ish, etc that others mentioned above. It's just a damn shame that Dougram, Layzner, Galient, etch maybe some others, haven't already been fully subbed. It's a crime!

But Krinn is a pretty good protagonist. He's not some prodigy like Amuro but a trained pilot and his behaviour so far has been understandable. A normal kid where many other main characters are freaks.

That's what holds me back from Layzner ... having seen scenes of it on youtube, the OP, art, etc I can just tell it's probably something I'm going to love. But since ACR doesn't release shit, I don't really want to start it up with just 8 episodes translated. =\, dunno.

Yeah, I agree. 1980's mecha especially Takahashi's stuff had a style and professionalism that we don't see nowadays. Mecha today is catered for fanboys not general audiences to appreciate.

It's a matter of a shift in the perceived demographic. Then they thought well written plots would be more attractive to mainstream audiences.

These days mainstream audiences are targeted with various PR campaigns. Effeminate characters are common to attract female audiences, plots that are "too complicated" are avoided since they might put off audiences, plot twists are commonly used since they provide an immediate reaction, etc, etc.

It's just not for you then. I think it's probably the most real excitement I've had since Eureka or Gurren Lagann. The pacing is amazing and it's perfectly balanced so that whenever some dramatic scene or bit of action happens, it's really spectacular.

I also love FLAG, though.

I can see why some people would be bored. I get bored very easily but something about it really draws me in.

Then again, in one month I downloaded nearly all of 08th MST, MS IGLOO, 17 episodes of LoGH and a shitton of stuff off the Iplayer. So it's understandable.
