So what Kaiju movies has /m/ see lately? I just saw Gamera vs Gyaos. Pretty awesome monster IMO. I plan on seeing Gamera vs Barugon soon as well. Also have a Godzilla DVD set on the way from Amazon so I got plenty of monster films to keep me busy.

Oh and I saw the original King Kong. It counts.

Been on a Godzilla kick recently. Literally just finished the Heisei Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and I'm gonna watch vs. Space Godzilla and then vs. Destroya to finish off the Heisei series. Before that I'd watched the previous Heisei films, vs. Gigan and vs. Hedora, and then Final Wars. Final Wars was rather silly.

I just rewatched Final Wars and it reinforced the fact that Kitamura ruined a good thing with his "Cyber-alien-ninja" bullshit. I know Godzilla movies need a human element in them, but for a film that was to be the big guy's swansong, they could have pared back some of it for even more Kaiju madness. But keep Don Frye in it, he brought the awesome.

They cut about 4 monsters from the film to save budget. Megaguirus was used as stock footage, Kiryu was left out due to budget cuts, Destroyah was most likely replaced with Monster X, and Ebirah replaced Ganimes.

Sadly FW flopped at the Japanese box office.

Probabaly due to time constraints. Kaiju films are plagued by time constraints. Speaking of which I was reading this book about Tsuburaya and how the studio made him make 2 movies a year and how it took 6 months to make each one. They were constantly fucked for time. Gamera vs Barugon the maina ctor didn't want to do the role becuase he thought monster films were 'below' him so he faked sick for like 30 days or something. Eventually he did the role and he says now he was stupid and that he loved the parts he played.

No they don't.

This is the downfall of virtually every single piece of media that deals with otherworldly creatures, from Godzilla to Transformers.

People want to see giant shit beating the crap out of each other, not humans whining about their emotions and trying to get the audience to "relate."
