Just because. Based on a character that I identify with the most in a personal fanfic. Extended operations multi-role support (thanks to an abundance of Energy-based equipment), can function on the front lines if necessary, but otherwise operates a bit behind the front line. As far as being over the top, I'd peg it having a bit of psudo-science/quasi-magical stuff that helps with extended operations (Minovsky particles, GN particles, Magic Metals, the usual). As far as Terrain Preferences go, Black would translate to A or S specialty in an SRW game, while Gray would translate to B. In Weapons, Black is the main equipment, with Gray being either optional or situational equipment.

Might end up redoing this. Pretty generic I suppose but I really prefer faster agile fighting styles. Want to also add would like my mecha to have a transformation system (most likely transforming into a jet/flying mode). Also to clarify "energized melee" means something like Exias GN blades, there is a physical blade that can cut but it is generally energized, heated, powered up in some way. Like someone else said I wanna do a mecha RPG kinda deal now...

I wanted to do a One Year War alternate contuinity game for the longest time, but I ran into two problems: 1) Mekton Zeta is the perfect and, to my neurotic mind, only really acceptable format for a ground-pounding Gundam game. 2) Neither I nor any of my friends actually LIKE Mekton Zeta. I mean, I can hack some shit together in Mutants & Masterminds if I want an easier and more playable time, but that's really more suited for a super robot show or SRW feel than for tactical 08th MS Team bullshit. Anyone here know anything about Heavy Gear? Or have actual ideas for a system based on this thing?

I plan to run an 08th MS Team styled take on the Divine Crusaders war from SRW OG1 before long and it's what I'll be using, since it's not too crunchy and you can balance it pretty easily. On the other hand, if crunch is what you want, you could always use GURPS.

>>6404906 Mekton Zeta is honestly a pretty bad system so it's not surprising your group dislikes it. I'll be running an 08th MS Team styled take on the DC War from SRW OG1 before too long, and I'll be using M&M3e for it. While it's a fairly soft system, it'd be easy to make it more impact-y and gritty with a few homerules that make death cheaper and whatnot and limiting the potential uses of Hero Points and whatnot to give that ground pounder feel.
Alternately you could look into Silcore, which is more or less "Gundam, but the whole solar system and you play as Zeon." It's based off the Heavy Gear stuff, and it's pretty darn 'real robots'-y, so it'd be a nice system to potentially use as well, and you could simply discard the rules and whatnot you don't need when playing an alternate OYW Ground Pounder campaign.

Yeah I gathered that Silhouette Core is basically my only other option for specifically real-ish mecha games. I think I have that lying around.
I think more damage penalties, no Luck or Fortune feats, and generally just not giving out Hero Points might make M&M work...and being less loosey-goosey with range and positioning than I usually am since everyone will be moving at pretty much the same speeds.

Anonymous
>>6405711 Ok, here's what I'm suggestion.
Light Armor/Heavy Armor stays, since it already basically means Light, Fast, Low Defense as oppose to Heavy, Slow, High Defense
I'll remove Speed/Firepower, and instead replace it with
'Weapon Load out',
how much weapons and ammo you can equip on your machine. How does that sound?
>>6405712 It really should be a speed/power/armor trichotomy, but that doesn't fit well on this sort of chart. Plus it doesn't account for Area Dominance-oriented units, which often have all three in great measure but are impractical for mass-production due to their size and cost. I suppose that's hard to balance, though, given it's basically assumed most of us are making custom mechs to begin with.
Perhaps a place to list out the weapon complement would be in order?
Anonymous
>>6405751 And here's what it looks like.
As you can see the Weapon Loadout is bascially tied to the Light Armor.
How much points not invested in Light Armor will determine the machine's load out.
Do take note that putting all 10 pts on Light Armor doesn't mean that your machine is complete naked, it only means that your machine is equipped with minimum weapons and ammo
Anonymous
Quoted By:
>>6405786 I think I'll take 'Power' out of the chart equation.
>>6405828 I would say this actually makes it worse - the presumption that a unit with light armor is also going to have light weapons ignores units which pack great firepower into a speedy frame, but have paper armor - for instance, the types of units you'd use for the penetration component of a blitzkrieg strategy. It might be better to set the three as a trio of independent 10-point bars, and let the one filling out the form decide how much is allocated to each - perhaps give 20 points between the three bars if you want to keep it balanced.
Anonymous
>>6405786 >Perhaps a place to list out the weapon complement would be in order? Meaning? As in where to place the weapons?
>>6405866 As in what weapons the mech actually has. For instance, using
>>6405410 as an example: "2x beam chainsaws, 2x beam sabers, 1x beam rifle, 1x beam launcher, 48x "Hermes" missile launchers, 20x "Asclepius" missile launchers, 24x Options (1x beam rifle/saber each), 1x crusher claw/beam rifle, 1x hyper mega launcher". This section should probably be optional, as I'm sure most people haven't thought out their choices of weapons so thoroughly, but it allows those who have something in mind a way of putting down what their machine can do.

It also gives us a better way of balancing the chart. As it is, all machines are godlike. Add one more chart, and suddenly an average machine is truly average (5 in each section).
And, finally, you can classify ace pilots in roughly 5 types.
Steamrollers: maximum strength. Use a lot of small attacks or a stunning single attack to set up their one-hit-kills. (Strength)

>>6406075 The Machine Preference part seriously needs an accuracy section. It tells us the range and accuracy of the mech's attacks. You can have the most powerful machine around that can throw nukes like it's noone's business, but can you hit anyone with it? Can you do it from afar? It also gives us a better way of balancing the chart. As it is, all machines are godlike. Add one more chart, and suddenly an average machine is truly average (5 in each section). Also you can classify ace pilots in roughly 4 types based on the 4 stats you have.
-Steamrollers: maximum strength. Use a lot of small attacks or a stunning single attack to set up their one-hit-kills. (Strength)
-Snipers: they shoots you from very far away, hoping they can shoot you down before you get close. (Accuracy)
-Pluggers: they tank everything you throw at them and use stat-altering weapons to play a game of attrition against you. (Armor)
-Bushwalkers:they are difficult to hit and can get from one place to another easily. They dance around opponents. (Speed)
And finally, include increased critical-hit chances for strength and increased ability to activate defensive skills for armor.

If they have a cluster around them, it creates a force-field path to force them out of the way.
Then it runs like hell. Dummies that make it look like you shot it down, an emergency boost and a small, short-lived forcefield achieve that. And, if it gets hit, it uses it's "cannibal" recovery system to absorb any nearby debris to heal itself. It takes time, though. And, as a whole, this guy can't really handle clusters of enemies.

Yet, as a whole, this guy can't really handle clusters of strong enemies. It also has absolutely no good long-range attacks, needing to use stealth to get close. Also, real weak. It can dodge, but if it gets hit good, it is most likely going down.

Wow, that first sheet is really coming along nicely.
>>6409192 Sorry for sounding like a dunce- but how did you get to totals in the machine profile? (lower numbers like 40, 50, etc). Was it another 10d20 roll or did you calculate that differently? Furthermore, how did you determine the terrain proficiency, 1d4 roll or was it arbitrary?
My buds and I are seriously contemplating making an RPG system with this sheet as the basis for players' at table charts, with maybe another sheet showing their stats and current inventory.
>>6409910 It doesn't take much time, but it's not very useful though so you make a valid point.

>but how did you get to totals in the machine profile? (lower numbers like 40, 50, etc). Was it another 10d20 roll or did you calculate that differently? I took the point count from the Machine preference table and just multiplied them by 5. [5 in Speed become 25 for EVA, etc.] this is a really clumsy way to calculate things though so if you want I can streamline the whole thing for you.

>>6409206 It doesn't seem to produce bad stat results on the whole - I'm looking over some pilot stats to see what averages are. From what I can tell, 100 is the minimum possible for a stat - the lowest stat in OGs1 is a tie between Tetsuya's Melee and Defense, both 100, followed by Latooni's 101 Defense. Average stat totals across all six stats at level 1 is about 900 - Ryusei totals 890 (but has Telekinesis to pump up his final stats), Kyosuke totals 901. I would say, then, pilots get a base of 100 points in each of the six stats (Melee, Range, Defense, Skill, Hit, Evade), then get 300 more to spend among them, so that "average" at level 1 for a stat is 150. In practice, a pilot with 150 in all stats would be roughly equivalent to Russel, though probably without his deliciously cheap Guard. Russel himself totals 896 points, for the record.
For instance, using
>>6408677 for the example:
Mana Bryant
Melee 130
Range 150
Defense 130
Skill 130
Hit 180
Evade 180
Spirit Commands:

Quoted By:
>>6410618 The thing about the SRWd20 system is that it sacrifices complexity for ease of play and versatility.
For Couch's system, a maximum and minimum is definitely necessary for character building because the cheesability of the allocation process almost completely breaks it.
For my system, the preference tables on the chart are the only thing you'll put into and because of the random rolls you won't be able to entirely unbalance your player. It also allows for easier modifier application, be it through class of the pilot, a passive ability he possesses, or otherwise. Also pretty proud of that ass simple terrain mechanic.
The big issue my and couch's character creation systems present is adaptability. How do weapons factor in and what determines carrying capacity? What determines hit points and energy outputs? Essentially you have something very, VERY incompleteThough I suppose I could put down some base shit for that easily but I wouldn't know if my applications were adequate or not. It would require drafting.
Contrasting this, SRWd20 is playable and easy to use, but it isn't so simplistic that it delivers no satisfaction to a more seasoned player. It's a pretty solid engine in my opinion, hopefully Tom can get enough feedback from this early release to deliver a more thorough system. Also ships.
>>6410713 I think I'm going to take from your terrain ranking system, though adjusted to match A-rank meaning no penalty and S providing the only bonus. As such, it would be:
Terrain Proficiency Calculation
43- point pool
CLASS - COST - EFFECT
S - 18 - +10% to all hit and evade calculations
A - 12 - No terrain penalties
B - 7 - -10% to all hit and evade calculations
C - 3 - -30% to all hit and evade calculations
D - 0 - -50% to all hit and evade calculations, unit cannot move more than 1 square per action in this terrain without Accel
Quoted By:
>>6410908 Revised Stat Generation:
Players begin with a base of 100 in each stat, the minimum, and are then given 300 points to split between them. Starting stats are capped as follows:
Melee or Range: No more than 60 points may be spent.
Defense: No more than 30 points may be spent on Defense.
Evade, Skill, or Hit: No more than 90 points may be spent.
For a yardstick of what stats mean: 130 Defense at level 1 is about on par with Kabuto Kouji, 180 Evade is about on par with Amuro.
Now, the real tricky part here is Defense, because it's so much lower than other stats due to how it works (quick and dirty version: add your Defense stat to your morale, divide by 200, multiply by your mech's Armor, and take that much off the attack's damage). Making it cost more penalizes supers, not making it cost more makes it trivial to max out Defense.

>>6410908 >This setup encourages terrain rankings of three As (indicating normal performance) and a B (the pilot's weak terrain). Well that breaks it.
>>6412256 How so? That's about average for most pilots, and is indicative of someone who's reasonably well-trained - you can handle the machine fine most of the time, but there's an area you're not as comfortable in. Remember A means no bonus, no penalty - in other words, average. Getting an S in one terrain, that is to say being exceptionally skilled at fighting in a particular type of battlefield, comes at the cost of having thus specialized your training, reducing your ability to fight as effectively in other areas. The alternate rule prevents people from dumping Water completely in order to get an S rank in Air and A ranks on the others - you have to bring at least one other stat down to B.
If you want pilots to be weaker, so that they're only comfortable in two terrains, reduce the points available for terrain selections to 38 points (or 34 with the Water rule). This gives ABBA terrains.
>>6412337 OR you could get two S ranks in Land and Space and a B in water then D in air, considering a lot of real robots don't even fly. Such as a Dom or a Gundam or something. So yeah, the main allocation system is pretty broken.
Even the hard modo one is a bit easy to nerf certain things in favor of almost complete terrain mastery in that case. S D C A.
This system generally favors non flying mecha, or in other words most real robots.
For the water rule, S D D A.
There's just too many points, and the cost levels are a bit arbitrary, however I do like your A rank being no difference and only S giving a beneficial stat alteration. Though the percentage gain is a little iffy. How hit % and dodge rates would calculated is the main reason.
After consideration, I'd go with

The points costs might require some further adjustment - I'm considering also making it somewhat class-based, so a newly-recruited kid with some special talent doesn't have good terrain rankings due to little training, but someone with a military background starts with significantly more points to spend on those rankings, at the cost of not being able to purchase skills like Newtype.
