SRW Noob Advice

Good day, /m/en.
I'm downloading SRW@3, because I've heard it's the BESTEST.
Decided I'd sink my teeth in and try to decipher the moon runes.

Before I get started, though, is there anything about the series up until SRW@3 I should know?
Should I play Alpha Gaiden first, since it has a translation?
Any tips for a newbie who's going to try to translate his way through a game?

no, play srw j since it has a translation and won't kick your ass. you really have no need to translate anything, you just need good memorization. (like the forth command down does this , the flash senshin looks like this.)

Alpha Gaiden isn't hard. It's as good a start as any.

Sure it is. The huge majority of SRW games are. Just because Alpha Gaiden isn't "Babby's first strategy" doesn't mean it's difficult.

Every SRW except 1-2-3-4-F-FF and Impact's difficulty is between 'it's so easy that I didn't do anything and I got the credits rolling' and 'oh well, I finished it using my favorite units and lost just two stages, it isn't that bad'.

I really feel you gain a lot by playing the Alpha games in order.
The stories make more sense and there is a definite power level progression. (Getter G and Great Mazinger being available right from the start in later games, obsoleting Mazinger Z and original Getter. for instance.)

J probably is a good starting point.
You practically have to put effort into losing, and the Puzzle Robos will get you familiarized with all the different gameplay elements and how you can exploit them.

Alright, good anons. I'll play SRWJ (and Alpha Gaiden, if I can find it) to get a handle on the gameplay before digging in to SRW Moonrunes.

OP here. My japanese is pretty broken. I know how a lot of the words sound, and some of the basics of sentence structure, but I can't read the alphabet for shit.
So I got myself some hiragana flashcards, and between that and Google Goggles I should be able to soldier through.

Katakana tends to be more useful for SRW, since virtually all of your robots and their weapons will use those, while the menus and dialogue are kanji-heavy as-is.

I'm not quite certain how helpful Google Goggles will be, having never used it.

Yeah, definitely don't try until you can kana.
Luckily it's easy peasy lemon squeezy. Write out (or print if you don't care to learn writing) the hiragana and katakana charts and have somebody help you memorise them by pointing and asking "what's this one?" After a couple of sessions doing that you'll probably have it figured out. If a dyslexic retard like me can do it, anyone can!

I downloaded a kana app for my phone, some I'll review it for a week or so. By the time I'm done with J and AG, I should be in decent shape.

And after all, reading SRW games is my 'goal' for learning to read japanese, so using them as a learning tool doesn't suck either.

I'm just glad I didn't waste more time on hiragana.

If you haven't played any SRW before don't jump straight into Alpha 3 since you will find the platoon system quite confusing and there seems to be clusterfuck of units.

Game itself is not hard though some of the boss units are really tough
